What's your chip?

Hi Friends,

It’s Saturday morning and I find myself with my list in hand at the grocery store.?

It’s a game to me, like the old game show “Beat the Clock”. The wheels on the cart are squeaking as I hit the brakes for tortilla chips and potato chips for my mother-in-law. Then to the bakery aisle. Waffle mix and chocolate chips, minis, of course. Now, over the frozen aisle for a mint chocolate chip for my wife. And in twenty-two minutes, I am out the door.

Lots of chips. What about the chip for business? Not the food, of course, but the inspiration or edge to be the best?

It can come in many places. Perhaps it’s the person who doubted you going into business for yourself. Maybe it’s the client who said that we don’t need another agency. Perhaps it’s that the other agency’s candidate was hired.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I did not see my father cry as I was growing up. But in 1978 I saw him balling. And he was really disappointed.? He told me that he worked all year for a bonus. He exceeded his boss's dreams for the year. The bonus was $60,000 – in 1978 dollars. And then it was gone. His boss reneged. This was my dad’s chip. Over the next year, he saved enough money to move us to Atlanta and start a business.? For the next six years, as his company grew, he would occasionally mention Arnie, his former boss.? Then, he sold his business and became a multimillionaire. Oh, but it gets better. He reinvested back in the business, kept controlling interest, and sold shares of his public company. Not too bad for a first-generation American with a high school education born and raised in Brooklyn, NY.

What’s the chip on your shoulder that inspires you?
