What's Your Biggest Fear?

What's Your Biggest Fear?

Today I just want to share a simple story that I’m sure you can relate to — with an important takeaway.

During one of our live coaching sessions this week, one of my clients shared a very riveting story.?

It was a story about how we react in the moment of fear when we are not prepared and don’t have any training to keep us grounded and focused.?

When he was just a teenager, he encountered a terrifying situation when a large and appearingly vicious dog started carrearing towards him, salivating at the mouth giving the impression he was in a very dangerous situation. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn’t…he lost the ability to make a sound judgment in that moment because of his fear.?

All he could do was run as fast as he could to get away and protect himself, which, I’m happy to report, he did manage to do. But his experience left him with his heart beating beyond his chest for many minutes to follow, sweat dripping down his face and the feeling he would hyperventilate as he couldn’t get enough breath.

Have you ever experienced a similar situation?

My client said: “this experience taught me the importance of staying grounded, keeping focused, not letting a situation which is fear-based, control me, but rather me being in control at all times.?This helps me in high stress situations every day now.”

So why am I sharing this with you today?

Because what my client experienced is no different to the fear people experience when speaking in public. The physical manifestations are the same. Pounding heart, dry mouth, uncontrollable perspiration, tunnel vision, lack of focus and the feeling that you want to run away.?

If you can relate to this, I encourage you to face your fear head on because you will learn from your experience and you will develop your skills by doing it. You can also learn techniques to stay grounded, focused and in control.

You would think my client would now have a long-term fear of dogs, but quite the contrary. He absolutely loves dogs. You too, can learn to love public speaking.?

Let me know if you have any questions or would like to know more about our programs or upcoming events. We even have a program specifically designed to help you to become a confident speaker.??
