What's in your backpack?

As a kid, I loved to travel! In my younger years, I road-tripped around Australia scouting locations, I was always the first to take on a long-distance project and spent all my time exploring. Every holiday was somewhere new, meeting new people, creating memories.

But one thing I always do is plan and pack for the occasion. Whether I'm going skiing, or trekking the bush, I was equipped (but my better half is WAY better at this than I am). This all came down to our first family trip back when I was 8 years old.

We moved from Fiji to freezing cold New Zealand. As beautiful as NZ is, you have to admit it's no tropical paradise and we came very under-equipped! I vividly remember having 3 layers of parkers we bought on arrival watching in awe as jogger sprinted past in shorts and a singlet!

This kept in my mind, before embarking on a trip, make sure you have what you need AND what you don't need.

How does this apply to what is more relevant in life and business:

  • Be clear of your goals or desired future state - An old friend of mine also has a travel bug has been trekking around Australia and when I first met him came back from a trip to Antarctica. Planning for both trips would be vastly different. Your approach to equipping for your dream job vs your new business will differ.
  • Be equipped with the necessities - If you're going camping, bring a tent. Similarly, if you're starting a new sales job or you've decided to launch your own new business, do you have the necessary training and coaching you need? Do you have good mentorship around that can teach you and help guide you?
  • Keep only what's needed - Have you ever been hiking with someone who brought everything but the kitchen sink? Very common in high achievers is taking on too many things at once - they want to be a champion powerlifter, while building a successful business, raising 2 kids at the same time. Sure, there are people that can do it but if you have a goal with a date, can you prioritise? Can you apply some delayed gratification so you can hit your goal?

What are some things you can eliminate from your backpack?
