What's Wrong with Wishing to be the Best?
After realising that Cristiano Ronaldo (considered one of the best soccer players nowadays) released his movie trailer called "Ronaldo" I became interested in exploring what for many people means egocentrism but for others is a witness of what you can get if you work hard.
Believe it or not this post is not about being rich or famous (attributes that may come to our minds when listening about Cristiano), but about being the best at what you do.
It is his desire of being the best what calls my attention. Not everyday you hear about a person who explicitly pretends to be the best.
Being the best also means being the best for your team
One thing leads to the other, being the best wouldn't mean anything if it doesn't make a positive impact to people. Definitely Cristiano is the leader at Real Madrid soccer club. Being next to a person who is an example to follow definitely increases competitiveness and performance level.
"He’s helping me become a better player, which is my constant goal" - Gareth Bale
Being the focus of attention is not easy, but Cristiano takes the risk and fails many times, he is criticised, but when least expected he surprises the world and that is when people have to stop and value his dedication and perseverance.
Being the first also means accepting being the second one many times
This is something Cristiano does it very well as he has been behind Lionel Messi during three years waiting for the FIFA Golden Ball. Now he is the current winner.
Working to be the best makes a person not to fear the failure and ignore negative thoughts from others. Accepting failure is certainly a sign of humility, which means getting to know your own limitations.
"If you ask me, yes, I’d say he’s the best in the world" - Rafael Benitez
Hard work, sacrifice and self motivation
Probably you and I have only seen Cristiano on a TV screen during a soccer game or on an advertising commercial, but for those who know him since his childhood or have played soccer with him, they agree on three things: hard work, sacrifice and self motivation. Unlike other players he simply doesn't settle for the abilities he has, instead, he always works for more.
"I've never seen somebody training like him" - Deco
It looks like wishing to be the best doesn't sound too bad, but still sounds too hard as it needs: hard work, sacrifice, self motivation, perseverance and humility.

Erik
