What's Wrong With Me?

"What's wrong with me?" she asked with a whiff of hopelessness.
I asked what she meant.
She said her whole world seems to be moving faster but she seems to be moving slower.
"For instance," I asked.
"Well, okay. At work (which I love what I do and get paid well for it), our company hired a younger person to be groomed for a position in a new division the company is planning to ramp up early next year.
"I have been put in charge of orienting this person to how we are running things. More and more, I am getting pushback from him about how we do things - how we've always done things.
"At first, I was like, 'bless your heart, you have no idea how the real-world works'. But after a few pushbacks, I'm starting to believe maybe he's right. So, I have been trying out his suggestions and doing things a little different and it IS easier."
I asked her what that had to do with her wondering what was wrong with her.
She said, "Because I wonder why I didn't think of these ideas myself. I wonder if that means I'm becoming the old person I vowed I'd never become. I'm afraid I'm stuck in my rut and I can't break out of it on my own."
This is an example of some of the scenarios I'm hearing from my clients and others in the market I serve - the #genx generation. If you can relate, you're noticing signs of aging that you've never seen before. You're wrestling with inner voices that are saying things like,
First of all, welcome to the club. These voices are not unique to you. We all hear them.
Second, these voices are hot air. Don't give them the power they don't deserve. Instead, acknowledge them. Look them in the eye and say something like,

"I hear you. I notice you.
Now go away."
Listen, today you are as young as you will ever be. Today is the first day of the rest of your legacy. Today is the day to start fresh - not from scratch, but from experience.
So learn from the younger generation. Since when did we decide to stop learning anyway?
Teach the younger generation. They may have innovation on their side, but they lack the experience that you can provide.
Life is only just beginning for you and for me. And I hope that gives you hope today.

I'd like to tell you how much I appreciate you reading the GenX Weekly. As a fellow GenXer, it's a privilege to write it for you.
Tired of not hitting sales goals? Together we can build a strategy, while focusing on differentiating, us, as humans from automation and AI, so we are exceeding quota. 2025 IS OUR YEAR!!!
2 年I love this Scott Couchenour, 4th Qtr Coach because it resonates with me. I have my feelings of inadequacies when someone else (the younger gen) is thinking faster than me or outside of the box and I wonder why I didn’t think of it?!?! But it is all just self talk noise. I realize that and this helped me to do so. Thanks.
