What's Worse Than Obscurity?

What's Worse Than Obscurity?

Why do we create any kind of content here on LinkedIn?

We all have different "sub-reasons" that we often point to:

  • To educate
  • To persuade
  • To entertain (looking at you, Chris Bogue )
  • To market
  • To sell

... ultimately to be seen.

And more importantly on this platform - for our businesses (or companies we work for) to be noticed and given the opportunity to demonstrate the kind of value they provide.

I used to think that obscurity was the big monster to fight in the battle for attention.

Having your business shivering in the cold shadows of your competitors, not being seen by anyone is certainly a miserable place to be.

But I've realized that there's an even bigger demon to slay out here as we battle for attention ...

Sameness.

Even the face we make when we say it:?"sameness".?Blehk.

Sure, obscurity is bad news for any business.?If no one knows you exist because you're doing no marketing or networking or putting your hand up in any way, then they certainly can't do business with you.

But at least in that scenario, you're expending zero energy to get zero results.

The sneaky enemy of sameness appears when you're working your butt off to make a bunch of noise and produce a slew of content and after all of that ...

... your business just looks like the beige Toyota Camry of your industry. (No offense, Amanda Peers ?? )

It just blends into the background and no one really thinks about it.

I want better than that for you and your business.

That's a big part of what Power Content is all about.?

You don't have to be seen by everyone. Just the right ones. And we certainly don't want a bunch of activity for activity's sake.

We want to create content that:

  • Has a point of view
  • Moves your industry forward
  • Focuses on unique aspects of your target clients
  • Describes how you provide value differently than anyone else

And if we can't answer that last one, then there is a bigger issue than the content we're creating ( Chris Michel and I were just talking about this yesterday)!?

We all have an amazing opportunity to broadcast to the world.

Let's help people find us by creating something worth broadcasting.

What can you do today that helps set you apart?

How are you different? How do you stand out? I've got a few ways but it's an important question we should all ask

This is absolutely correct! You make some excellent points (although my silver Camry is currently NOT on speaking terms with you). That's why I always tell my clients to go against the grain. Be on a platform that doesn't typically post that type of content. Use a different medium. Be silly. Stand out. You nailed it!
