What’s The Value Of Your Employees?

Most business models are focused on creating, delivering and capturing value from the customers only. However, the Truly Human Business Model goes beyond that. It also creates, delivers and captures the employee value. Most business hardly counts the value that comes from the employee. ?To them the customer is the one who pays the bill. The customer maybe the one who pays the bill, but its the employee who makes sure the customer is Satisfied enough to pay the bill.

Why is it that no organization captures the value of the employee on the balance sheet? Yet we talk about the employee being an asset to the company. Whatever you count as valuable, you ought to capture how valuable it is to you. If you don’t know or measure the value of your employees, how do you know whether they are an investment or a cost?

There are employees who are being compensated for much more value than they are creating. The value being captured is negative on the balance sheet. The only way an employee can be an investment is when they are creating much more value than they are getting paid. It is much more important that an employee focus on creating much more value for their employer than she is being paid. That makes her a great investor in her future.

Not knowing the value of your employees means that someone on your team will be a bad investment with you knowing. Employees who are creating more value are simply compensating for the bad investment of that one or more employees. You have to make sure every employee is producing enough value to take care of being employee. When one employee relies on the value being created by another, you have an unbalance and inhuman system. Every employee should create value to pay for their bill.

Just as you have a product that must pay for its production so also you need to have employees that have to pay for staying on the pay list of the company. Anyone who is not creating more value than the cost of keeping them will sink the ship. They are more like iceberg. Gradually they can sink a company no matter the size.

Every company need to be asking itself what is the return on investment in its employee: what value are we capturing from our people? Is there anyone who is becoming a bad investment? When companies grow that don’t measure the contributions of employees, they end up having more employees whose compensation is far higher than their contributions.

What you measure, you can improve. If you don’t make it a policy to measure the value your employees are capturing you won’t know where to improve. The employee is the product of a company in the Truly Human Company. As such you have to find a way to capture the value employee creates and measure your return on investment.

Making Your People More Valuable

To double the value you capture from your employees, you need to triple your investment in their transformation. You need to transform them into value creators by equipping them with the value creation mindset and capabilities. To add value to them so they can be valuable to you, you have to first see value in them. However, if you don’t see value in yourself, there is no way you can see value in others.

To capture the value of your employees, you have to first of all make investment that will bring out the best of them. You will want to capture that value that comes from the investment of their heart, mind and body.?It is important that you give value to them first that will increase their engagement.

Here are ways to increase engagement among your employees:

1. Inspire Them With a Purpose & Cause Bigger Than Life: People need to be motivated every day, but once inspired they remain inspired for life. Management motivcates, but leaders inspire. When you have a purpose and cause that is bigger than life, your people get inspired. When inspired people are known to go the extra mile and do the things they thought they could not do. They unleash their full potential and ingenuity. When every one of your people is inspired, you will capture great value. When your purpose and cause inspired them, they will always be looking for ways to add value to your company wherever they are. Inspiration awakens the ingenuity in us. And when a man is awakened, he stays awake and create great forms of value. An inspired workplace is a high energized place.

2. Treat Them Like Humans: The way people feel about themselves impacts their performance. If you treat people like humans they will act like humans. Most times we treat them as functions and numbers. We treat them based on the title, position or job description they bear. We only bring out of them what the position requires. However, when we start treat them as humans with care, respect and honouring their dignity, they will surprise us with the kind of value they can create. When you treat them as humans you will deliver happiness and build their self esteem and self confidence. When you treat them as humans, they go home happy and fulfilled and anxious to be at work the next day. They will always think of ways to move your company from a level of low productivity to a level of high value and usefulness to the marketplace. You have to make them feel they matter.

3. Create The Right Environment That Brings Out Their Best: When you create the kind of environment that gives you people the freedom to be all that they can be, you will maximize their performance. You don’t have to tell people what to do. All you have to do is create an environment that challenge them to grow, they are free to be all they can be and they feel inspired each morning and you will have a highly productive team. They will act like owners in the workplace and look for ways to create value. Instead of competing, they will collaborate. Create an environment that nurtures the gifts and talents of your people and allow them to release their full potential and ingenuity. When the human ingenuity is unleashed it empowers resources with the ability to create wealth.

4. Add Value To Them Through Coaching: In coaching you help those employees who are not performing well to perform better, while those who are performing better to perform at their best. Training programs are instructor based, but coaching is focused on the people instructed. Most times we forget what we are taught because training doesn’t come with support. However, when people are coached they get supported and get feedback on their performance. It’s proven that it takes between 60-120 days of deliberate practice for people to install new mindsets, habits and master a capability. I work with teams to install the value creation mindset and capabilities. Few hours training will not transform their mindset and help them develop the capability of a value creator. They need to practice, fail, learn, and improve until it becomes part of them.

You need to start measuring the value each one of your employees create to know the value each one of them is bringing to the table. If you have created all the factors that make employees to bring out their best, yet an employee remains a bad investment, he may not be the right fit for your organization. You need people who will create more value for you to capture than take more value from what others have created.

Employees are assets and investments to the extent that the value they create surpasses the cost of keeping them. If they cost of keeping the person is more than the value you are capturing from them, they are liabilities. You either find the position that brings out the best in them, or you let them go.

For your company to be valuable in the marketplace, everyone of your employee need to create more value than they take from the company.
