What's Trending: March 27, 2023 Edition

In today’s roundup of trending topics courtesy of Ayzenberg Senior Director of Insights and Analytics Chris Gibbons, we examine evolving consumer habits and ponder the future of TikTokers as U.S. lawmakers debate a national ban of the ByteDance-owned app.

The Final Four Are Set

For the first time since 1970, three schools will make their Final Four debut at the men’s NCAA Tournament. Additionally, this year’s tournament will also mark the first time since seeding started in 1979 that no team ranked better than No. 4 has reached the Final Four.

Now the stage is set for San Diego State to take on Florida Atlantic and for Miami to face UConn on April 1, with the winners going on to battle it out for the championship on April 3.

Where Would TikTokers Go Following a U.S. Ban?

With the recent debate around TikTok bans in the U.S., marketers should consider where these users would turn to if access to the platform is shut down (that's a big if).

Apparently, the answer is Instagram Reels, according to a recent Cowen survey, with 26 percent of adult users in the U.S. indicating they would transition to the Meta-owned platform.

YouTube Shorts is also positioned to be a popular landing spot, though many users expressed no intention of shifting to another platform if TikTok goes the way of the dodo.

Comfort with Digital Advertising on the Rise

Comfort with digital advertising is growing in the U.S. According to a CivicScience survey, most U.S. adults will click through a digital ad that’s relevant to their interests.

That’s an improvement from March 2021, when 57 percent of U.S. adults said they were not likely to click through these ads. As capabilities in targeting and personalized marketing continue to increase, expect the effectiveness of these digital ads to continue to grow as well.
