First Things

Earth Day took place this weekend, so to mark the moment Skift Associate Editor and Archivist Rashaad Jorden wrote?A Short History of the Travel Industry’s Sustainability Efforts. The story looked at how hotels, airlines, destinations, and cruises have performed around climate change the past ten-plus years. “Travel brands loudly proclaim their commitment to sustainability, but many of them have a long way to go to ensure their words aren’t lip service,” Jorden said in an email to me on Friday.?Read the story in full to see what he means.?

It's fascinating to see the numerous opportunities for the hotel industry to enhance their sustainability efforts. Investing in power conditioning equipment, such as power factor correction, harmonics mitigation, voltage regulation, solar and wind energy, UPS systems, and battery energy storage systems (BESS), could significantly contribute to a greener future. By adopting these technologies, hotels can not only reduce their carbon footprint but also demonstrate their commitment to responsible tourism, attracting environmentally-conscious travellers. Let's hope more hoteliers recognize these opportunities and take the necessary steps to make a positive impact on the planet.

PART 2 of 2 Without restoring economic sustainability, it will be very challenging to address any other aspect of sustainability - ecological, social and cultural. Without restoring the economic sustainability for hospitality and tourism businesses and entire destinations there will be no sustainable tourism development. Economic sustainability is the core foundation of the holistic approach of sustainability as otherwise the means and resources are missing. Digital transformation, democratization of digital technology, capacity building in destinations is therefore a key element to restore economic sustainability, enable suppliers to become more resilient, get them independent from OTAs, reduce cost and complexity and enable them to take back control of their own visibility, digital presence, reputation, communication and foremost distribution.

PART 1 of 2 Rafat Ali Skift - I always find that the word SUSTAINABILITY has become inflationary used. Also, it is very often reduced to just climate and/or plastic and emissions etc. I strongly believe that SUSTAINABILITY in the hospitality and tourism industry must be looked at more holistically. It is much more than just CO2 emissions. In order to achieve sustainability, it is important to address both the root causes and the symptoms of environmental, social, and economic challenges. Due to the pandemic, the polycrisis and especially the defective value chain of OTAs, the economic sustainability is no longer a given. This is especially true for destinations in low and middle income destinations where Tourism has a mandate to create prosperity through employment, education, youth and women development etc. In the current poly crisis situation and with the defective OTA value chain, the tourism mandate is at stake in such countries. Suppliers not only pay 60% to 80% of their GOP, lose customer control, but also lose in their own visibility and rate sovereignty. This is not economically sustainable. It is of utmost importance to restore economic sustainability of hospitality & tourism businesses and entire destinations.
