What's in a Title??

What's in a Title??

For a long time, I’ve been fascinated—and sometimes frustrated—by the power we give to designations. Titles open doors and signal authority, but they also create artificial comfort.

They can mask competence, making it easier to assume someone “knows what they’re doing” just because of their position.

As an HR professional turned multi-functional leader, I’ve experienced this firsthand.

Stepping out of my comfort zone to learn new skills and anchor diverse projects has shown me how much value lies beyond titles.

It’s not the designation that defines you; it’s the courage to take on challenges, the ability to deliver impact, and the willingness to grow in unfamiliar terrain.

In the last few weeks alone, I’ve had the opportunity to represent different functional hats in various forums—HR, business strategy, strategic projects that are core to business, Marketing & Communications. It’s been both rewarding and eye-opening. However, I’ve noticed how quickly conversations shift the moment people ask, “What’s your title?”

It’s as though the work being done takes a backseat to the designation that comes with it.

Titles can box us in, influencing not only how others perceive us but also how we perceive ourselves. They create unnecessary hierarchies that stifle collaboration, innovation, and confidence.

So, how do we break free from this reliance on titles?

  1. Look Beyond the Label: Evaluate people for their ideas and actions, not just their designations.
  2. Encourage Authentic Leadership: True leaders inspire and empower regardless of their title.
  3. Foster Inclusivity: Create spaces where everyone, from the intern to the executive, feels their voice matters.

Stepping out of my comfort zone has taught me that growth happens when you shed the dependence on a title and let your actions speak for themselves. It’s not easy, but it’s worth it.

Have you ever felt limited—or defined—by a title? How do you navigate the balance between designations and competence? Let’s discuss.
