What's Stopping You from Reinventing Your Career?
What's stopping you from reinventing your Career??
I know you've had that thought.?
We all do, especially as we approach the 2nd half of our careers and midlife.?
A recent Microsoft?study?of 30,000 people revealed that 46% of workers are considering a major career pivot or transition. For many, this search goes beyond just a change of role and into the realm of personal renewal or reinvention
But most professionals who express an interest ultimately fail to follow through.?
This is mostly true for senior execs as personal reinvention requires a lot of life appraising, involving big decisions and choices and this becomes difficult for two reasons:?
Firstly the perception of others. Most leaders' current path is seen as successful from the outside looking in.
Secondly, leaders' identities depend on their work, making it harder to consider another way.?
Listen, it took me 10 years.?
I know, you haven’t got that long. You want the hack or quick fix.?
Sorry, it doesn't work like that. It takes time for most of us.?
As a rule of thumb whilst having these thoughts, you generally discover someone who has been on a similar journey, and who seems to have cracked it!?
For me, it was Rich Roll, the endurance athlete and world-renowned host of the Rich Roll Podcast.?
I listened to his Podcast 10years ago and something spoke to me.
A guy who at 40yrs old was burnt out washed out but had found a way.?
A way to redesign his life. A way to become his most authentic self.?
A way to be of service to others. I wanted in.?
Not immediately, that takes time but I knew I wanted in.?
But of course, I can't do what he did. I'm not this, that or the other.
And then all my limiting beliefs on why this could never happen to me hit my thoughts like a tsunami.?
But it did happen and I'm on the path to designing the life I want to live on my own terms, whilst being my most authentic self, whilst being of service to others!?
Whilst thinking about whom I wanted to become, I also thought about whom I didn't want to become and found this was just as powerful.?
Did I want to be someone who couldn’t find a better way?
Did I want to become someone who was trapped in corporate safety trappings??
Did I want to become worn out, burnt out and unfulfilled?
Asking yourself these questions is a powerful start to this process.
So how did I start??
I started to journal writing down my dreams, ambitions and the person I wanted to become.?
I started to buy books and read. Tony Robbins 'Awaken the Giant Within' was a game-changer.?
I started to follow people whom I deeply admired on similar paths - I understood the notion of 'Success Leave Clues.'?
I started taking tactical breaks from Alcohol and started feeling the benefits in productivity and mental clarity.?
I started to double down on things I enjoyed; Bikram yoga, running races, meditation and well-being.?
So what is the message here?
Surely lots of us do this and don't redesign our lives??
But I had a vision.?
I also believed in action. I didn't have a super A game action plan, or ten-year strategy mapped out.?

Taking action opened doorways to everything else that followed.
There are too many to list but here are a few key moments:?
I invested in a career coach, and I asked for help.?I got clarity on what was important for me in life. I re-designed my values. I made good financial decisions. I started a side hustle in my spare time. ?I completely removed Alcohol from my lifestyle.?I wanted to become the best version of myself. I invested in myself through self-development courses that unlocked limiting beliefs.
?With each action came a realisation that there is always a way.
The limiting beliefs started to dissolve as I realised this.?
Andy Ramage , My friend and coach recently said;
?"Why not dream about all the things you can achieve, not over the next year, but over the next decade"?
?He recites the Bill Gates quote:?
?“Most people overestimate what they can achieve in a year and massively underestimate what they can achieve in 10 years” Bill Gates.
I fully subscribe to this as it relates to my own journey.
'But I don't want to have to wait 10 years', I hear people say.
You don't necessarily have to.?
That really depends on your vision, your goals, your clarity, and on your purpose.?
So let's go back to the original question;
What's stopping you from reinventing your Career??
You! Yes, there are common traits like procrastination, overthinking and limiting beliefs like 'How can I become self-sufficient' but ultimately it's YOU and your ability to make a small start. It all starts with making a start. All these common traits can be overcome through belief and action.
People are doing it, in their masses and it's working.
It's not as difficult as you think and as I always say;
"If I can do it, anyone can do it"
