What's stopping us?

Hey Folks! It's been a while.. and the prompt for this article was a news snippet I heard on the radio whilst doing the school run this morning. The presenters were updating listeners on the latest development to changes (or lack of) in gun ownership in the US.. and it got me thinking.. why on earth are changes to laws that were created by us in times different to now not being changed, when so clearly those laws just have no place in our society today??

Since 2016, I have been on a bit of a journey of understanding growth mindset (a bit late to the party I know), psychology of change and appetite to risks. Working with Entrepreneurs these three topics always came up in conversation, daily! And it came down to one thing, what is one prepared to do to progress to the next step.

Back to the real world problems we're facing, and I mean the genuinely big problems like climate, poverty, war or inequality.. add to the list as you wish, I feel that despite having all the right information at our finger tips, and knowledge of exactly what change needs to happen, and how to make it, we, society are still not rolling our sleeves up and getting it done.

Why? Is it because we're still not feeling the pain. The pain of staying the same has not yet outweighing the pain of change? Are we too comfortable? In these easy times have we forgotten how to be courageous? Or are we hoping someone else will do it for us?

I know it's Monday morning, and my heart tells me that the start of the week should be filled with optimism and the desire for productivity.. so in that vein, I ask, what change are you prepared to make? and Why? If you take that big bold terrifying step, what amazing learning/success/adventure will you experience? How will it help you to grow on your personal journey, and how does it help others? Share your thoughts?

Finally; we're all of us, in this together you know, so don't ever think you're alone.

I'm a bit late to respond but I've been pondering on this all week. As ever, I think the answer is that we need both. A phrase I often use with my clients is "Find what's working and do more of it. If it's not working, stop it and try something different." I think it's that second part that people often struggle with. It's often easier to carry on doing what you know how to do rather than try something completely different. So I encourage people to see the 'different' as an experiment and break it down into small steps so that it's more manageable. Of course its much easier to support other people to apply this wisdom than to apply it myself ??

Hi Sharon, Reading Atomic Habits at the moment and loving the shift from goal to personal value orientated. Would I like to be healthy? Start doing what a healthy person would do, one decision at a time. Andy was involved in the british cycling example in the book. Make 1% improvements in everything to makes massive improvements overall. How that relates to how we can influence bigger subjects would seem to be passion focussed. If you have a strong passion to change the world, you will find the people and means to change it. I feel privileged to know one person like this and he has changed the world, but this has taken decades, persistence and a lot of collaboration. Either big or incremental, change will happen and should be embraced!

Thanks Tristan, really great perspective and insight. Behaviour, mindset, influencers, goals.. all super important considerations. And i do think risk appetite plays a part.

Hi, Sharon Rai. I'm a firm believer in the adage 'change happens slowly then suddenly'. A bit like the overnight success who has worked the clubs for decades and then got 'discovered'. Maybe it's a question of fate or freewill. Fate tends to be what happens suddenly when we've allowed ourselves to drift into a situation. Freewill might better describe what happens when we make conscious decisions, ongoing, to influence our direction. I'm not always the best at this but, to have a target condition helps to influence our behaviours (I want to lose weight so I'll eat less shit and run more) and then suddenly I can get back into those jeans. It feels as if this is a better way forward than slicing off a leg. Is that what you meant? The bit that is most difficult to manage is the effect of external influence. Choosing who to listen to and to be aware of those who have their own agenda gets tricky, in my experience. I hope this isn't too preachy.

My sort of Monday morning musings, in fact any day any time musings. In my experience we may not notice the incremental shifts as much as we do the big brave decisions. And incremental shifts can be the prelude to the big change as it gets us in that place where we can make them. I've seen this in my clients so often... the incremental changes seem incidental to them and because they assimilate them quickly they don't often realise they have made the changes it becomes the new normal. And then bang they make the most powerful and empowering decisions that are business changing, business life changing and personal changes. It's an honour to observe the process.
