What's so different about the 'new Data Governance paradigm?'

There are many Data Governance initiatives. They all have at least one thing in common. Be it Privacy, Compliancy, Customer intimacy or Data Monetization, all Data Governance initiatives require that we consider the following questions:

  • What data assets do we have?
  • Who has access to (& uses) the assets?
  • Where are such assets to be found?

Simple questions. Seemingly straightforward. But when a set of questions remain unanswered there must be more to it.

Why has it proven so hard, what have people tried & where did we go wrong?

  1. Breaking out of the silo

Data Governance is treated in Silo's. Patrick Dewald, senior Director of Data Governance at INFORMATICA states: "... a Data Governance Silo is a vertical solution to a horizontal problem."

Then he continues to offer 4 more points:

  1. Go beyond definitions
  2. Facilitate, don't police
  3. Embrace the chaos
  4. Do less, achieve more

Sound advice - though additional questions may pop in mind: "sure, but why & how?"

What does it mean to embrace the chaos, how do you not police in a compliancy context, which defenitions do we need to go beyond & what determines the difference between doing governance for governance sake & achieving tangible results?

Patrick has taken time and effort to answer ....

... if after you need to know more about how to materialize your #DataGovernance business case, how to go about getting silo buy-in, how to build your roadmap or maybe how to get started, a simple reach-out will suffice.

Happy holidays!
