What's the Secret to Leading...

What's the Secret to Leading...

...those who are different from you? The secret is to understand that, not only is everyone different from ??????... but to understand that: everyone is ??????????????????.

????????????.

We are all different from each other and we all bring different value and different values to our work environment. This uniqueness that we all bring to the table, makes leading challenging... there is no "one-size-fits-all" approach. The above picture seems to imply that as leaders we need to recognize that people are different than us, but the same as each other... I would suggest that this is an inaccurate depiction of who we are leading. The sooner that we realize this, the sooner we can shift our perspective from a collective leadership approach to one that is focused on the individual.

Relationships matter.

As leaders, we need to get to know those we lead so that we can understand what differentiates one individual from the person standing next to them. As we serve those we lead, it would serve us well to recognize each person's individual culture, values, preferences, genders, ethnic background, race, history, faith - that all of these characteristics play a factor in who they are and how this has not only shaped their perspective over time, but also how that shapes their perception of those around them. As we lead, taking the time to understand ?????? the people you are leading ?????? - will help shape their confidence in you as a leader...

Above, I indicated that relationships matter... scratch that... ???????????? about the people you lead matters. The first step to leading with purpose is to build those relationships; however, let's be real... while you can have a relationship with others... there is such a thing as a terrible relationship.

Yeah... ?????????? ???????.

Care about people. Do that by appreciating who they are and appreciating them as individuals. As you do this, they will understand that they matter to you.

Interesting thought: If they matter you... more often than not, you will matter to them. AND... ??????????????????? ????????? ???????? ???? ?????????????????????? -?????????? ???????? ???? ???????? ????????????????.

The result will be a mutual respect that values difference... not a respect that is ???? ?????????? of our differences.

Be the leader that you are willing to follow.

"Care about people. Do that by appreciating who they are and appreciating them as individuals. As you do this, they will understand that they matter to you." My colleague, Dr. Molly Kreyssler, studied what helps people succeed. This was one of the primary outcomes. When we care about and value someone for who they are rather than who they are relative to us, it opens up opportunities to serve them in meaningful ways. Great piece, Greg.
