What’s the Real Cost of Staying Stuck? If You’ve Ever Wondered Whether Investing in Yourself Is Worth It, Read This.

I’m showing you two versions. This first one is after I instruct Chat GPT to proofread my LinkedIn Newsletter article and give me a hook. The second one is the version I typed into the app that give me this first condensed one.

The Real Cost of Not Investing in Yourself

What happens if you don’t bet on yourself? Spoiler: The cost is far greater than money.

We often hear about the value of personal development, yet many people hesitate to invest in themselves. Whether it’s the fear of debt, lack of time, or uncertainty about results, these excuses hold us back from unlocking new levels of growth and opportunity. Yes, it can feel overwhelming to charge your credit card or commit to a program. But here’s the truth: the discomfort is temporary, and the rewards are life-changing.

In this article, we’ll break down the five most common reasons people avoid investing in personal growth—and how overcoming these excuses can elevate your life.

1. “It Doesn’t Apply to Me.”

Many dismiss personal development, thinking it’s irrelevant to their goals or careers. But the reality is that any investment in skill-building opens doors you didn’t even know existed.

For a long time, I felt the same. Growing up in a single-parent household, I didn’t have many resources or role models. We never owned a home, and long-term thinking wasn’t a part of our reality. I had no idea that jobs paying over $200K even existed—until I stumbled into tech sales. Seeing my teammates’ success amazed me. They committed fully, working harder than others, and it paid off.

It’s easy to think, I don’t look like them, I don’t have their resources, or I didn’t have wealthy parents to guide me. But those are distractions from your potential. Our weaknesses often become our greatest strengths. My background gave me resilience and empathy, and it allowed me to connect with fascinating people who inspire me to grow.

2. Being Stuck in a Victim Mentality

When we think life is happening to us, we miss out on solutions and opportunities. Breaking free from this mindset requires intention and growth.

I recently had a call with Ian Koniak , who told me something that resonated deeply: The problem is the gift. For instance, if I find myself procrastinating—focusing everything else aka shiny object syndrome instead of making sales calls—it’s not just a distraction. It’s an opportunity for reflection and growth.

Yes, my enthusiasm can make me spread myself too thin. But it also connects me to incredible opportunities, like joining communities such as Pavilion or the Sales Success Summit. With intentional growth, even flaws become assets. I’ve become more present in my personal relationships, set better boundaries, and let go of my need for external validation. And fast forward to present day, I have potential to make pretty life changing money here at a company I love with a product I deeply care about.

3. “It’s Too Expensive.”

Many stay in survival mode, focusing only on immediate needs and making any excuse in the book. But this scarcity mindset keeps us stuck. The real question is: What’s the ROI of staying where you are versus investing in growth?

Every day, we have a choice. We can complain about the economy, our manager, or our company’s shortcomings—or we can take action. Too often, people stay in the same job for years, only to wonder why they aren’t moving forward. Investing in yourself—whether through career coaching, training, or even a professional resume writer—can be the key to unlocking your next level.

4. “I Don’t Have Time.”

Time is the ultimate equalizer—everyone from Bill Gates to Elon Musk has the same 24 hours. The difference is in how they prioritize personal development.

At Untap Your Sales Potential, we focus on a strategy called the 12-Week Year. It’s a simple framework that emphasizes time-blocking and staying accountable to your goals. Without structure, it’s easy to fall into the trap of busywork. Early this year, I spent most of my time creating content because it felt comfortable. But being honest with myself, I knew it wasn’t aligned with revenue-generating activities.

“It’s not a lack of time that holds us back—it’s a lack of the right skills and priorities. Extreme self-awareness and understanding human psychology are essential for personal and professional success. With those in place, progress becomes inevitable.”

5. “Why Would I Hire a Coach?”

Even the best athletes, like Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan, hired coaches to push beyond their limits. Yet, many people hesitate to invest in coaching, fearing the vulnerability it requires.

Coaching can be intimidating—it often feels like the coach knows you better than your family does. But that’s the power of having someone who believes in your potential and holds you accountable. A coach helps you see what’s possible, even when you can’t see it yourself.

The insights I’ve gained from coaching have transformed my life. I’m a better husband, I’ve improved my relationships, and I’ve learned to set healthy boundaries. These changes are priceless—and far more valuable than any paycheck.

Final Thoughts

The real cost of not investing in yourself is not just the opportunities missed today—it’s the compounding effect of staying stuck. Personal growth isn’t just about money or status; it’s about becoming the best version of yourself and unlocking new possibilities.

If you’re hesitating, ask yourself: What’s the cost of doing nothing?

The previous version: The Real Cost of Not Investing in Yourself

In this article, I’ll cover the most common reasons people avoid investing in personal development—and why that fear is holding them back. Yes, taking on debt to invest in yourself can feel overwhelming, whether it’s charging a credit card or committing to a program. But the long-term dividends far outweigh the short-term discomfort.

?Let’s break down the five most common reasons people hesitate to invest in themselves and how overcoming these excuses can unlock new levels of growth:

?

????????1.????????“It Doesn’t Apply to Me.”

Many people dismiss personal development, thinking it’s not relevant to their goals or career. But the truth is, any investment in skill-building opens up unexpected opportunities.

Too many of us are stuck in our identity. I’m not going to lie I did too most of my life. When you grow up without as many resources. I didn’t have the best upbringing growing up in a single mother family and growing up we never owned a home because we weren’t the best at long term thinking so I never knew that it was even possible to have a job that pays more than $200k so when I discovered tech sales I was blown away by the numbers that my teammates were doing. Of course, they committed to it and so of them were working many many more hours then everyone else but still. Be carefree of thinking oh I don’t look like them or I don’t have the resources like them.

If I too focused as to why I’m not a good looking 6 foot 2 tall white dude with good genetics born with amazing parents then I’m really just focusing on the wrong things.

All of our weaknesses become are biggest strengths. If I grew up with wealthy parents, I’m not sure if I would have the same drive or compassion I do in generally but because of my upbringing I’ve ended up meeting some of the most interesting characters and I love all of them because of the spunk and the ability to want to be more and grow and learn all of the time.?

????????2.????????Stuck in a Victim Mentality.

When we believe life is happening to us, we close ourselves off from solutions and new possibilities. Breaking free from this mindset requires intentional growth.

Everything is a gift even the problem, the suffering, all of the hardships. During a call with Ian Koniak yesterday he said instead of relating to the distractions as a problem. The problem is the gift as he would say. Let’s say I’m getting distracted and I’m thinking about working on my podcast instead of making dials because Im procastinating. Notice that as a sign, an opportunity of growth instead of beating myself up about it. My estuhiasm which is one of the Enneagram types is one of my biggest weaknesses because I spread myself too think but it also gives me perspective because I have joined Revenue Collective/later changed to Pavillion, how I discovered Scott Ingram’s Sales Success Summit, Joined Jamal Reimers Enterprise Sellers met Nishan who is one of the most incredible human being? in the world as my mentor, joined Untap Your Sales Potential and so on.

I can choose to focus on why my life sucks and why I’m all over the place or I can leverage my energy to channel it into more productive ways which so far as lead me to get a lot of opportunities here at Untap Your Sales Potential where I’m surrounded by people who have made millions in their career in a way that’s empowering and literally transforming lives.

Even if I just reflected on what we’ve gone over during our coaching sessions with Ian. I’ve become a more present husband, I have better relationships with my family. I no longer have to distract myself or need external validation where I used to have people pleasing tendencies I can set better boundaries for myself. That’s way more than any monetary amount can give me. Fast forward a year I have the opportunity to make over half a millio na year in a job that I love.

?

????????3.????????“It’s Too Expensive.”

People focus on survival mode rather than growth. The problem with this scarcity mindset is that it keeps us stuck where we are. Consider the ROI—what could you earn or become with the right guidance?

There’s two choices we have everyday. Should I wallow in self pity and focus on why the economy sucks, why my manager is not the best fit for me? Why my company’s products is not selling. I’m not in the right industry, organization, not in a healthy relationship. I’m not denying if any of this is true but so many of us stay at the same company for ten years and then wonder why a lot of my skills aren’t landing me this next year. Or I can choose to invest in a career choices pay for a professional resume builder or do anything that helps me move forward in the right direction.

?

????????4.????????“I Don’t Have Time.”

Time is a universal constraint—Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and all top achievers have the same 24 hours. The difference is they prioritize learning and improvement.

There’s a framework that we cover in Untap Your Sales Potential called the 12 week year. It’s quite simple but it’s literally writing down and time blocking your calendar to meet these goals. Whenever we have white space we resort to the path of least resistance which in my case during the first 8 months of this year I was just making content because it was comfortable and it was what I loved to do. Was it actually contributing to revenue generating activities? Not really, if I picked up the wrong and make calls. If I’m being honest with myself, it would have way more productive in reaching my goals but I too afraid. It’s not that we don’t have enough time. We don’t have the skills to be able to reach all of the goals we have. Everyone has so much potential if we invest in growing and having extreme self awareness. Even if you you have self awareness then understanding human psychology and how other people work is also a very useful skill.

????????5.????????“Why Would I Hire a Coach?”

Even the greatest athletes—like Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan—hired coaches to refine their skills. It’s about elevating yourself beyond your current limits, but not everyone is willing to make that commitment.

It might seem scary putting yourself out there. Sometimes it feels like the coach knows you better than your parents do but its honestly an opportunity to level up and have someone who knows what’s possible and will hold you accountable to working all of your goals.
