What’s ready to be released?

What’s ready to be released?

It’s already clear that 2025 is a year of—and for—big change.

We’re seeing it in the circus that is the US government right now—which is having repercussions of different kinds all over the world.

If you’re into metaphysical pursuits, you’ve probably heard it, too: astrologers are talking about major events that happen rarely and are now coinciding. Energy workers are talking about huge, universal shifts.

I’ve been feeling it. Have you?

And the question that’s been coming up over and over is, what’s coming up to be released?

There are different ways to ask this question:

  • What are you ready to let go of?
  • What’s no longer serving you?
  • What can you clear away to make space for something new?

Change can be hard, and scary. But since it’s here, we have a few choices:

  • We can try to ignore it and keep doing things the way we’ve been doing them. (At some point, this might no longer be an option.)
  • We can resist the change. (Usually, this just makes things harder for us.)
  • Or we can get curious (and maybe even excited) and go with it.

I live in a small place. I also have a lot of experience moving all my possessions from place to place, across town, across the country, and across the world. So I adopted a rule long ago:

When something comes in, something goes out.

This applies to just about everything but food. If I buy a book, or an item of clothing, or something for the apartment, I donate something I don’t use anymore (or, even better, several somethings).

Sometimes I’ll do the clearing first, to prepare. If my birthday’s coming up and I know I’ll be getting a gift (or buying myself one ??), I’ll go through my closets and put together a bag of clothes I don’t wear anymore to donate.

And sometimes I just do the clearing because it feels good, without any intention of getting more stuff. I love the feeling of fresh, clean energy that fills up my home when I get rid of a bunch of things I don’t need. The feeling of spaciousness and possibility.

I do this regularly—at least twice a year; often more.

It feels like 2025 is demanding that we do this in our lives. Our work. That we sweep out whatever’s no longer serving us, whether it’s:

  • tangible things we’ve collected that we no longer use
  • practices that no longer bring us joy or achieve the results we want
  • relationships that are hanging on simply because of time or tradition
  • work, or anything else, we no longer love doing

Earlier this month, I decided to pause the executive roundtables I’d been hosting for more than a year. I’ve met a lot of amazing women leaders through these events, and some terrific connections have been made. I used to enjoy them, and get heartwarming feedback after each one. After 15 of them, I had a strong feeling that it’s time to channel that time and energy a little differently. And I’m excited about what’s coming next. ?

This morning, a mastermind-type group I’ve been part of for about a year, which has been running for about 17 months, came to an end. The leader knew it was time to bring our meetings to a close. And she’s leaving that space open for something new and equally meaningful to come in.

How many times have you said—recently—I’d love to [fill in the blank], but I just don’t have time? Or space? Or energy? ?

Consciously or subconsciously, you’re sending out a message that there’s no room for anything else, for anything new or different.

Is that your intention? If so, fabulous. You’re on the right track. (I can be a little snarky because I’ve done this soooooo many times myself.)

But if you, like me, get excited about new possibilities, new options, new energy, then you have to create space for the magic to happen. For the universe to send you all the amazing things and people that are ready to be in your life.

How?

  • Look at your calendar. Check the next few weeks. What meetings have you said yes to that you don’t really have to attend? What social invitations have you accepted that you’re not looking forward to? What can you say no to?
  • Look at your closets. What shoes do you keep looking at because they’re adorable and then putting back because they hurt your feet? What clothes are you hoping will fit again sometime in the future but haven’t been worn for a year or more? What did you buy because you thought it would look great, before you realized you just don’t love the color? What are you keeping solely because it was a gift and you don’t want to offend the giver?
  • Look at your office. Do you still have boxes of business cards from three jobs ago? Paper files from last century? Calendars with cute animal pics that a nonprofit that wants your support sends you every year? What about books you know you’ll never read again? Or office supplies you no longer use since you started using apps for everything? ?

What can you let go of to free up space, time, and energy for all kinds of positive new things to come in?

This morning I realized this type of shift happens for me personally about every 10 years. Never before epically with thousands of other people! I love these ideas about embracing the shift by using it to clear out what no longer serves.

I steep my tea for 4 mins. I find that I can get a surprising amount done in those micro-chunks of time. I wash dishes, sort mail, do some exercises. And several 4 min chunks add up!
