What’s the Point?

What’s the Point?

Our ideas are not static. They don’t come out of thin air. They are shaped by our experiences and the unique insights we gather over time. To navigate complex ideas and decisions, it’s essential to break them down into their simplest forms. By doing so, we gain clarity and focus.?

Food for Thought: How Would You Sell Your Idea in One Sentence??

Imagine this: you’re a founder with a new product, and people are seeing it for the first time in a movie. What’s your one sentence that grabs everyone’s attention? What’s that first line in the script that makes your product irresistible??

In today’s fast-paced world, being able to simplify complexity is key to identifying opportunities and re-evaluating your business in changing conditions. But let’s be honest, simplifying isn’t always simple.?

What Entrepreneurs Like Branson and Jobs Taught Us?

In his 2008 book Business Stripped Bare, Richard Branson writes:?

“When you’re first thinking through an idea, it’s important not to get bogged down in complexity. Thinking simply and clearly is hard to do.”?

Look at Steve Jobs, who didn’t sell the iPod as just another MP3 player—he told the world they could have “a thousand songs in their pocket.” That simple, powerful message cut through the complexity of the technology and made the iPod the iconic product we know today.?

How Do You Simplify the Complex??

Thinking simply and clearly, as Branson and Jobs have shown, is a skill that can unlock growth and success. But how do you get there? Here's a simple thought exercise that I've used with many clients to help them articulate complex ideas:?

?

A 3-Step Exercise to Simplify Your Idea:?

  1. Re-examine:?Go back to when the idea first came to you. What were the key insights or observations that sparked it? Revisit that moment of inspiration.?
  2. Re-test:?Now, consider those same insights from a different perspective. What assumptions have you made? Challenge them, and re-test your idea from various angles.?
  3. Re-validate:?Share your refined thoughts with a trusted group and ask them to distill your idea into one simple sentence. The goal is to come up with a succinct message that encapsulates your vision.?
