Stoic Quote of the Week
Do battle with yourself: if you have the will to conquer anger, it cannot conquer you.
-Seneca
What I learned this week:
I had the pleasure of speaking to a great group of entrepreneurs last weekend at the Achieve Biz Explosion conference. I do enjoy sharing what I know with a group of people. This time, I was asked to kick off the conference and be the day's first speaker. The guy who sets the tone for the conference. A little extra pressure to make sure that how I present and what I present engages everyone gets the audience sitting on the edges of their seats wanting more from the speakers who follow me. I followed my normal routine prior to giving a talk, reviewing my notes, mingling with the early audience, and checking the vibe and layout of the room. That's when I noticed there wasn't a cameraman. There was supposed to be a cameraman. "Why isn't there a cameraman!" I was told high-quality videos and even some follow-up interviews with audience members. "CRAP! This is BS!" I thought. Then, I switched my mindset. It doesn't matter if there isn't a camera. There is an audience. It doesn't matter if there isn't an audience if there is one person. That's what matters. I was there to share what I know and make an impact on someone's life by sharing what I know with others. A solution came to mind when I shifted my mind from anger and blame to opportunity. First, I have a fancy phone with a very fancy 4K capable camera. I had that, and I had a very nice Bluetooth microphone that I could remote into the phone. Add in the charging cord and an extension cord. Now, I only lacked two things: where was I supposed to put the camera? I can't ask Ms. Suzanne to hold it for the whole talk. Then I remembered a conversation I had with a fellow attendee the night before over whiskey and cigars; he sells tripods! Surely a guy who sells tripods has at least one in his truck? Mac had just what we needed: a tripod with an adapter for a phone. Boom! Problem solved, almost. There was one more minor problem that I didn't consider until I reviewed the video later that night. I needed a cameraman. I turned to my friend Jake, who, for my good fortune, decided to sit in the front row. I asked Jake if he would start and stop the camera video. He agreed and went above that. Jake zoomed in and out and panned the camera as I presented. WOW! What an over and above action. In less than ? hour, I went from frustration, blame, and feeling sorry for myself to a great solution. I could only do that because I wanted to serve the audience and develop a solution that worked for me and the speakers who followed me. A simple mindset change kept me from being pissed off when I stepped on stage to being where I should be, excited to share with the audience. Thanks, Mac and Jake, for the great support.
Planning thought of the week:
Very little ever goes according to the plan. In the Army, we said no plan survives the line of departure. Mike Tyson said everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. That tells you that you have to be ready to adjust and change at a moment's notice. If you get tied to the plan and find yourself mad and feeling like you can't get anything right because the plan didn't work out, you will find yourself in a hole digging deeper. If you change your outlook to one of, how do we fix this instead of who do we blame? You will find a solution.
Business idea I heard about or thought of:
Conferences are back! I'm just talking about the big-name ones; all conferences are back, and people are traveling all over the country and world again to attend conferences. Do you remember that business plan you wrote in 2019 to be a corporate conference arranger or a corporate entertainment consultant? Pull that thing off the shelf, dust it off, and get after it. Conferences are back in full swing, and the number of people attending them continues to grow. That's a twofold reason to be the business that runs these conferences. Businesses want to be represented, and people want to be there because there is a sense of adventure and excitement in meeting new people. Both categories suffer from FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). Businesses want to be seen and branded. Attendees see it as an opportunity to improve their lives through education and interaction.

Someone I met this week:
Jake Clendenning, aka cameraman, Saturday morning and I met last October at an Achieve conference. He was doing what I do: showing up early before anyone else and getting the room's layout. That attracted us to begin talking. It turns out that Jake helps businesses grow through his coaching, speaking, and staffing business. But that isn't it; Jake is a hunter who loves hunting in his 'backyard' in Wyoming. You can guess what the majority of our conversations are about! As things were falling into place Saturday morning, Jake sat next to my phone on a tripod. As I mentioned, he went over and above in sitting next to the camera duties. I've known Jake for about six months now and know him to be a top-notch guy who loves to help others. If you are looking for a business coach, speaker, real estate agent, or just someone to have a whiskey and a good conversation with, Jake is your guy. Check out some of his videos on YouTube, Jake Clendenning .

9 个月Otis, Great story and lessons learned! I'm sure you will now be more prepared for this contingency when you speak, as will anyone who reads this! With an aviation background in Special Operations, I learned to make contingency planning an integral part of every operation. Now that I think about it, how much contingency planning do I actually apply in my personal and business life? Definitely some, but probably not enough! Thank you for the valuable insights! I appreciate what you do!

9 个月Thanks for sharing your experience at the Achieve conference. You launched us off that day perfectly. We would have never known your frustration prior to getting on stage. You're a true professional. Loved your points about leadership qualities. My take away is it's time to build the right team. Jake and Mac are more of the great leaders I met that day as well.
