What's the one thing missing from your sales team?

[If you can't be bothered reading but just want an amazingly affective strategy then it's towards the bottom] Gary

Before I begin, let me share with you an analogy of why your sales team aren't performing to the best of their ability and brining in the orders you expect.

Give a piece of classical sheet music to a professional orchestra and no doubt it will sound utterly amazing, however, give the same piece of sheet music to a school orchestra and it isn't going to sound the same right?

In reality, here then lies the problem.

In both orchestra scenarios, the sheet music was identical, the notes are in the same place, and the same instruments were used to recreate the beautifully written piece but, you'd get very different results.

What if you replace the sheet music with your company's 'Sales Process'? 

You put your recruits through your regular induction training, they've been out with the existing top performers, and they understand your product so why are there such huge anomalies in results and performance?

Is it the fault of your expertly written and thought out sales process or does it merely come down to a single common denominator?

Having trained, coached and mentored 100's of businesses I can categorically answer this question and it boils down to a single common denominator.

Now I know what you're thinking... What is it then, Gary?

The one thing missing from sales teams is the ability and the understanding of how to Influence and Persuade others.

Think about the greatest football managers, the best politicians or the most inspirational speakers. Do you think they'd class themselves as 'salespeople'? Can you imagine them having to learn various closes, what an open or closed question is or practice a fabled objection overcomer passed down through the ages?

Of course not but they all have something in common. An innate ability to influence a group of players, persuade the general public and inspire strangers to take action.

What if your team were to ask their prospects the following and what would the most logical responses be?

  • Example 1:

Sales: I suppose you're wondering what the next step is? 

Prospect: Actually, yeah, what is the next step?

Sales: Great question, so all I need from you now is your company bank details, a form of ID and I'll get on with the paperwork. Fair?

  • Further Examples

I know what you're thinking, what's the lead time? [Actually, yeah, how long is the lead time for this?]

Now, I suppose you're wondering how long the meeting will take? [Actually, yeah, how long is the meeting?]

These, of course, are only two of many statements your teams could include to ensure their prospects are focused, on track and thinking exactly what you need them to think about at any given moment.
