What's The One Change That Will Get Your Resume Through ATSs?

Wouldn't it be nice if there was a magic pill that could automatically get 100% of your resumes through Applicant Tracking Systems? If would be great if it were that simple, and that's what most job seekers want ... easy and effective.

Most career resources teach the easy part, but ignore that easy is rarely effective. It's probably what you're doing now, if you're not getting the interviews you want.

Unfortunately, there is no magic pill. There's not just one thing to make it easy and effective to get your resume through computer and human pre-screening.

It takes many small changes to make a big difference in making your resume more effective in getting through ATSs, and then being recommended by human reviewers, resulting in an interview.

Here are a few ways to start making your resume get through pre-screening and get more interviews:

  1. Show On Your Resume That You're Qualified: Not on a cover letter, not on bio - If it's not on your resume, it doesn't exist. Don't make an employer guess. If you can't meet the minimum requirements of a job, you're going to get screened out - It's the job of ATSs and recruiters to screen you out. Does this make it more difficult for people trying to change careers/industries/job functions/levels? Of course it does, but it's not impossible - You've just got to do more to overcome these differences.
  2. Send To An Audience Of One: Even if you're applying for the same job, different employers and hiring managers have different needs. ATSs and recruiters jobs are to screen out standard resumes, templates, LinkedIn profiles, because they aren't customized to meet THAT hiring manager's needs.
  3. Don't Spray And Pray: Sending a high volume of resumes and hoping you get lucky is a great way to be unlucky. ATSs and recruiter processes are designed to screen out spray and pray candidates ... that's why there's a term for it.
  4. Formats Matter: The formatting can get you rejected - The more complicated the format, the greater chance that it won't be ATS friendly.
  5. Prove You're Better Than Just Qualified: Recruiters get many times more qualified candidates than interview spots, so they don't have to hand out interviews for every qualified candidate, only the best ones. When many are qualified, then qualified = average. Prove you're one of the best.

Hi Phil! I saw this after-the-fact. What are the chances you have a recording of this? I would LOVE to get your input.

When you get past the ATS you still have to meet the "criteria" from the hiring manager. Gender, age, education, etc. If every hiring manager put aside their personal opinions and bias' then many would be hired for jobs they are more than qualified for. Phil Rosenberg thanks for sharing your ATS info, be sure to post the next free webinar as I might learn something new that has changed since my last virtual interview last year for my current role. Looking for a possible career change. ??

I can't express how overwhelming the thought of customizing every resume and cover letter without knowing a human will actually look at for due consideration. I struggle finding any employer that pays enough to qualify for a 1bd apt solo (3000k avg+ income if basic is 1000k before utilities). Then add in seeking ethical reputable employers with entry level art/ design that will actually have the entry level position as an entry level position instead of having devalued a senior or advanced positions and roles. Even trade skills locally aren't well paying either even before "greedflation".

When we leave our fate up to algorithms, we are doomed. Yes people have to at least try to ensure their resumes are ATS compliant but the key is to speak to real life human beings and bypass this broken system all together.
