Since Christmas, I’ve been striving for consistency in my work and writing. However, life often has a way of taking over, and for those of us who are neurodiverse, staying on track isn’t always as straightforward as it might seem.
The phrase “What’s next?” resonates strongly with me. It’s a well-known slogan from The West Wing, a TV show following US President Josiah Bartlet and his team of staffers. As a big fan of the show, I find this question particularly relevant when reflecting on my own journey. At the start of the month, I sat down and asked myself: What’s next for me? How do I change the narrative? How do I move things forward?
One of my goals this year is to write more about my experiences—so let me start by introducing myself.
Who Am I?
I’m Arran Smith, a severely dyslexic and neurodiverse individual. Diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of nine, I’ve also experienced traits of ADHD, ASC, and dyspraxia throughout my life—more so since COVID. My passion for supporting neurodivergent individuals began early. At just nine years old, I started helping others with dyslexia, eventually becoming one of the youngest teachers at the Leicestershire Dyslexia Association, supporting children with literacy, study skills, and technology.
Throughout my career, I’ve worked across various sectors, including business, retail, and the not-for-profit sector. Today, I lead what I call a portfolio lifestyle, combining multiple roles, experiences, and areas of expertise to drive meaningful change in the neurodiversity space.
What Have I Done?
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working for the British Dyslexia Association, spending over five years as a consultant for Microsoft, and building platforms that empower individuals in education and business. My journey has had its challenges, but valuing my knowledge and experience is now a priority—not just for myself, but for the community I serve.
Going forward, each of my articles will highlight key projects I’m working on, including:
