What's next for public EV charging in the UK?

The future of EV chargepoint provision in the UK is becoming clearer.

Here's a brief summary of the UK Government response to the 2021 Consultation on the Consumer Experience at Public Chargepoints...

  1. You will be able to use any public charger: mandatory retrofit of contactless payment for existing 50kW & above and contactless payment (or free) required for all new public chargers >7kW. The payment method must not require membership or pre-registration. Could this (perversely) discourage adoption of Plug & Charge (ISO 15118)? Also, I fear we might see slow (<=7kW) destination chargers becoming the preferred option due to lower costs...
  2. You will (eventually) be able to use your bundled mobility contract or membership card anywhere: mandatory roaming will come in 24 months after the new legislation is passed. It's a tough ask, but ultimately I think this is needed. This might be challenging for smaller destination chargers (>7kW) and some rapids, especially those where the business case is already marginal...
  3. You will be able to find public chargers easily: mandatory OCPI registration for all new public chargepoints. This is a good thing. OCPI isn’t perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got. This means there will finally be a single source of the truth for finding public chargepoints - whatever charging app or navigation system you use.
  4. You’ll pay per kWh: slightly mixed feelings on this one. "Per kWh" is similar to paying for fuel, so it's familiar. Simple is good! However, this legislation might undermine more innovative ad-hoc charging models. e.g. paying "per hour" as part of the parking charge can work really well in some contexts. I hope that innovative payment models will still be permitted (provided of course there is an option to pay per kWh).
  5. Charging should be much more reliable: mandatory 24/7 helpline for all public chargers and a 99% reliability target on main roads. Threat to extend this to all public chargepoints. It’s a stick, but something that’s needed. I wonder how big the stick will be?

What do you think?

Personally that mandatory OCPI cannot come quickly enough! Some of the data out there is horrendously outdated. A great summary Paul, thanks for sharing ????

Good summary. This technology has the future potential to track and disable stolen vehicles, also for EV tax purposes... Interesting times to come ahead of mass adoption...

99% reliability target on main roads. We will require a committee to agree on what 99% reliability means and to the best of my knowledge we do not have a definition of a main road. Google came up with: A main road is?an important road that leads from one town or city to another.
