What's Next: Future of Virtual Asset Regulation

Call for Proposals to Follow

Thank you to all who contributed to the Future of Asset Regulation event and launch the new IE Ripple Asset Regulation Lab.

One of our goals was that researchers can get a chance to see the opportunities to contribute to problems that lie between new ventures, regulators, and larger firms for Virtual Assets - and then be able to make RESEARCH PROPOSALS to fill those gaps. This new model is funded by Ripple and IE's Impact Xcelerator.

We will be making our call for proposals very soon, but first, I wanted to share highlights of research opportunities from the event:

What we learned about research topics

  1. Regulation is what is currently holding adoption back. The world needs the accepted set of rules in order to know that it is safe to use, This will enable these technologies at scale
  2. Not all regulators are not all the same - some like VARA in Dubai are progressive!
  3. Firms are now actually asking for regulation.??The emergent question is "what can be done to bring all the stakeholders closer together?"
  4. Another research theme: "Can we solve digital ID with AI and the same methods that will be used in the future of logins (without passwords)?"
  5. Research possibility: Should there be friction and/or a kill switch for crypto transactions to slow/stop the markets when things are going wrong? This implies a "man in the middle" model. And if so, how could something like this friction or control point be implemented.
  6. Which are the communities that would best benefit from this emerging technology? Maybe we should be looking beyond the first world or in micro-segments.
  7. How can firms like Ospree (Compliance) and Anchain (Blockchain Security) be part of the research for cross border or compliance topics?
  8. Can something be done to increase market liquidity and stability with technology solutions?
  9. Is there a mapping between DEFI regulation and the traditional institution to institution based regulation model? The idea is that traditional models are very focused on a transactions between two points (institutions), whereas DEFI is not. Can the distributed transactions be mapped to the traditional model?
  10. Along the lines of connecting protocols, what would enable the mapping between SWIFT and Blockchain?
  11. And for the economists in our network, it would be great if you could offer better understanding of the relationship and spill overs between crypto and traditional capital markets and the real economy (as a necessary input for regulators to better assess potential financial stability risks).

Of course all of this has been great for aspiring entrepreneurs understand the real problems and meet potential mentors and influencers.

Special thanks to all our Collider event guests:
