With the advent of technology, people have been exposed to new information by the different means. From the newspaper era to the radio, to television, and to the most recent one the Internet, each revolutionary technique has changed the way how we get involved with new concepts, products, companies, and brands.
For any product to be seen by customers, advertisement plays an important role and they need to be attractive and dynamic without being forceful.
David Ogilvy, known as the father of modern advertising once quoted that - A good advertisement is one which sells the product without drawing much more attention to it.
Studying the long gone history of advertisements, we can say that it has been subtle. Whether with its double-meaning logo or with the some Photoshop tricks, subliminal advertisement adds the aspect of cleverness to meet the criteria. The more the advertisement is clever, the better we feel about getting it and the more we feel good about the product.
Subliminal Marketing is a way of transferring a message by stimulating the unconscious mind of the recipient, without him/her consent. Subliminal advertising is a different kind of marketing technique where a message is intentionally embedded in an image or sound for a very short period of time. Many people might not be consciously aware of that fact they are being exposed to the subliminal advertisement and the implications of it which will change their behavior, attitude, and action after viewing/listening to such advertisement.
Our senses are continuously blitzed with heaps of information and only a small part of that information is absorbed by our conscious mind, however, our subconscious mind absorbs almost everything. The subconscious mind is like a sponge which absorbs information which is fed to it.
Today, the supermarkets are filled with various consumable items with differed options and companies are spending billions on advertising every year and the rate of expanding is also growing exponentially. Advertisers have found a way to separate the best from rest by using an informal concept of subliminal marketing. By this technique, advertisers expose customers to the image of the products and brands, without making them consciously aware of it.
Once the customers are exposed to such brain activators, the customer’s brain is made to believe the further decoding of the information by itself and taking the action on it without giving any acknowledgment to his conscious mind.
Examples of subliminal advertising
I think there is no other better way of understanding the concepts by using examples, including in advertising.
With the examples, you can understand subliminal marketing methods better and get to know how it works. We have gathered some examples of subliminal advertising which will provide better insights. So let’s get started:
Amazon
As we all know that Amazon is the world’s largest online retailer and a prominent cloud service provider. Amazon does not use subliminal advertising to sell their products, but their logo has a hidden subliminal message that you may have missed.
The Amazon logo includes an arrow which goes from the first letter to the fourth letter of the company name. The arrow joins to letters A and Z. Some theories suggest that it has a hidden subliminal message which says you will find all kinds of products from A to Z in their store.
SFX Magazine
SFX is an entertainment and sci-fi magazine that began in 1995. This magazine focuses on the science fiction and cinema stuff. Many experts believe that a subliminal message is hidden in their logo. Whenever a woman appears in their front cover, often designers cover the letter F so it can resemble as the E and making the readers view the title as SEX. Circulation of the SFX magazine itself speaks about how much sex sell.
The Simpsons
People don’t know that an advertisement is not always needed to create a subliminal message. One of the legendary TV series like The Simpsons has used full hidden messages and references which have gone unnoticed by its viewers.
The Simpsons have an episode where they flashed for few seconds to join the Navy message and some girls sang to join the navy in background.
Coca-Cola
Coca-Cola is one of the largest beverage company. They went the furthest as it was associated with the Lord of the Rings.
In the main movie prop which was a Ring, they engraved the word Coca-Cola that's literal meaning was One Ring To Rule Them All.
FedEx
FedEx logo also has a hidden subliminal message which can be missed by the most of the people. Experts suggest that the whitespace in the logo clearly indicates to an arrow - which has a meaning of a company’s ability and speed to deliver the products from one point to another.
So, here I've covered the basic meaning of Subliminal marketing to make you understand that subliminal advertising is the next big subliminal marketing method. Subliminal advertising has always been present from the printing press era to the modern internet era. Advertising companies have invested a lot of money to take advantage of this strategy. With this strategy, their only intention is to try persuading users into buying without realizing them.
