Rising malnutrition threatens Mozambique's children amid El Ni?o drought
Mozambique is facing increasing rates of malnutrition, particularly in children under five, following poor harvests due to El Ni?o-induced drought. There are 1 million more people at crisis levels of food security in 2024 than in 2023 and projections indicate a continued deterioration until the next harvest in April 2025.
Compounding the situation is the high prevalence of acute watery diarrhoea (AWD) and the ongoing cholera outbreak, which are risk factors in many of the same vulnerable areas.
The Government requires additional support to meet the escalating needs. UNICEF's response efforts are critically underfunded and will require additional resources to implement the necessary actions.
Lifesaving treatment for severe acute malnutrition
Awa, 29 months old, was hospitalized in critical condition at Mocimboa da Praia in Cabo Delgado. She received prompt treatment and was admitted to the Nutrition Rehabilitation Programme’s Outpatient Treatment. Fátima Nagib is raising her three children alone, facing challenges in ensuring their well-being.
IPC report highlights Mozambique's severe food insecurity
The recent IPC (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification) report highlights severe food insecurity levels in Mozambique. Between April and September 2024, approximately 2.79 million people faced critical food shortages, with projections indicating that around 3.26 million will be extremely vulnerable from October 2024 to March 2025.
In the coming year, an estimated 144,270 children aged 6-59 months will require treatment for acute malnutrition.
Children and women bear brunt of climate and conflict risks, report says
UNICEF's recent child-centred risk assessment report highlights the impact of climate-related shocks and stresses on children in Mozambique, as the country increasingly suffers from the effects of climate change and the prevalence of hazards continues to rise.

Training of community teachers?
Schools in Quissanga, Cabo Delgado, have been closed for most of 2024 due to recurring violence. While children and their caretakers remain in the communities, teachers and authorities have been displaced after being targeted by non-state armed groups.?
To keep children engaged, district authorities, with support from UNICEF and AVSI, trained community teachers, known as alfabetizadores, to resume educational activities. UNICEF is also distributing recreational kits funded by CERF to support these efforts and provide basic education and safe play opportunities while preparing children for a return to school next year.
New school opens in Cabo Delgado
Together with the Governor of Cabo Delgado, UNICEF and WFP inaugurated five classrooms, an administrative block, gender-segregated latrines, a kitchen, and food storage facilities at Escola Primaria de Ntele in Ancuabe, Cabo Delgado. The construction was carried out through a UN-to-UN Agreement between UNICEF and WFP, with funding from the Government of Norway.
Since 2022, UNICEF and WFP's project has also supported the school with teaching and learning materials, school meals, teacher training, menstrual hygiene kits, and nutrition and hygiene promotion.
Youth-Focused Clinic Tackles HIV Myths and Misinformation
Delfina, 18, and Martha, 19, are at the SAAJ clinic in Nante, one of 287 Adolescent and Youth Friendly Services clinics in Mozambique offering free sexual and reproductive health counseling. Mozambique has the third highest rate of new HIV infections globally, with AIDS as the leading cause of adolescent deaths.
Lifesaving R21 malaria vaccine arrives in Mozambique
Mozambique is introducing the lifesaving R21 malaria vaccine, a crucial step toward revitalizing malaria control efforts and improving child survival. With one child dying from malaria every minute in Africa, this initiative is vital.?
Supported by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and co-financed by the Government of Mozambique, the country has secured approximately 800,000 doses of the vaccine. The first phase, starting on August 5, aims to immunize around 300,000 children through the Expanded Programme of Immunization.
Transforming communities for a healthier future
Argentina Selinho, 25, is a mother of a 9-month-old boy and has served as a Multi-Purpose Health Agent (APS) since 2021. Her journey began in 2020 with training that equipped her to identify cases of malnutrition and other health issues in her community.
With support from the Japan Committee for UNICEF, FUJI TV, and in partnership with the Government of Mozambique, UNICEF is expanding efforts to form health committees, aiming to provide basic assistance to local populations.
#WorldBreastfeedingWeek
World Breastfeeding Week 2024 (1-7 August) showcased Mozambique's progress in breastfeeding practices and highlighted the collective efforts to continue reducing gaps and providing support for all mothers and infants. Mozambique ranked second in Southern and Eastern Africa for increased breastfeeding rates and ninth globally. The country has seen a 14.5 per cent rise in Exclusive Breastfeeding (EBF) rates, reaching 56 per cent - exceeding the World Health Assembly’s 2025 target of 50 per cent. The week featured an awareness campaign with radio spots, videos, and social media engagement.
Looking ahead, UNICEF is dedicated to expanding community-based nutrition programmes, enhancing health professional training, and advocating for breastfeeding-friendly policies.
