What's new at TéRAL RESEARCH?
Dear Valued Readers,?
Welcome to our August newsletter! Last month, we published an in-depth report on?China’s Wireless Infrastructure,?offering insights into its rapid 5G advancements. Additionally, we released two of?Stéphane Téral's Perspectives, one analyzing 英特尔 ’s NEX business unit and another examining the CommScope divestment and 安费诺 ’s ascendancy.?
China’s 5G Leadership & What lies ahead for 6G?
Our latest report on China's wireless infrastructure provides an in-depth look at the country's journey from joining the WTO to becoming a global 5G leader. China's aggressive 5G rollout, which began in 2019, has positioned it with the world’s largest 5G subscriber base and BTS footprint. The report highlights how the Chinese government has consistently prioritized 5G as a key driver of its digital economy, enabling substantial growth across industrial sectors. However, with geopolitical challenges reshaping the market and a projected slowdown in 2024, China is now preparing for the next frontier: 6G. This report details the expected transition, including potential field trials for millimeter wave and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) starting as early as 2025.?
What CommScope's Divestment Means for the Industry?
In July 2024, CommScope made a significant move by divesting its Outdoor Wireless Networks (OWN) segment and Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) business unit to Amphenol Corporation. This $2.1 billion transaction not only marks a pivotal shift in the wireless infrastructure landscape but also positions Amphenol as a formidable contender in the DAS and broader wireless component market. With this acquisition, Amphenol solidifies its leadership in Base Station Antennas (BSA) and DAS, while bolstering its presence in the emerging open RAN ecosystem. As CommScope focuses on its remaining business segments, Amphenol is poised to drive innovation and competition in the evolving wireless infrastructure space.?
In this perspective, we dive into the strategic implications of this divestment, explore what it means for the future of the DAS and open RAN markets, and discuss how Amphenol’s expanded portfolio could reshape the competitive landscape.?

What’s next for Intel’s NEX??
In our latest perspective, we take a closer look at Intel’s Network and Edge (NEX) business unit—a segment that, despite its critical role in housing Intel's RAN, vRAN, open RAN, and open vRAN products, continues to face significant challenges. In 2Q24, NEX accounted for just 11% of Intel’s total product revenue, signaling a concerning trend of decline. During Intel's August 2024 earnings call, CEO Patrick Gelsinger briefly addressed NEX, highlighting stability and future growth potential, particularly in AI and edge computing, but offered little optimism for the telco space. ?
In this perspective, we analyze what’s next for Intel’s NEX, discuss the implications of its shrinking presence, and explore whether the unit can rebound, especially in the rapidly evolving RAN market.?
