What's New in Safety: Latest Updates, Insights and Training Alerts

At ICAM Australia, we are passionate about enhancing workplace health and safety, reducing risk, and providing our clients with customised solutions.

We are excited to share updates from the field, staff announcements, and upcoming training opportunities.

One of our senior facilitators and investigators, Brendon Ladner , recently traveled to Papua New Guinea. Where he held a public three-day extended “ICAM for Lead Investigators ” course in Port Moresby at?Divine Word University.?

Brendon was accompanied by Charles and Bernice, who he has been closely working with since they joined the ICAM Australia Team in Papua New Guinea. Being an avid-fisher, Brendon was excited to be able to experience the local way of fishing with Charles. Unfortunately, he was the only one not to catch any fish!

Brendon and Charles were also able to attend the PNG Industrial + Mining Conference, where they developed key relationships with local organisations.

Recently, Brendon spent four days in the highlands of PNG training staff and contractors from the OK Tedi Mine in ICAM Investigations. He commented on how impressed and privileged he felt to have trained the group, who were eager to learn and develop their skills.

We're excited to share that Daniel Stone , one of our skilled Trainers and Investigators, has moved to our Melbourne office. Here's what he had to say about his new role and the opportunities it brings:

"Three weeks ago, I uprooted my life, sold most of what I owned, and moved down to Melbourne with whatever fit in my VW Polo, which was, unsurprisingly, not much.?

I made the move for a few reasons. Firstly, the chance to explore a new city, explore its vibrant culture, and connect with new people is exciting to me on a personal level.

As that might allude to, I love novelty—of new people, new situations, and new challenges. Luckily for me (and for ICAM Australia), this fits perfectly with our mission and goals as a company: to connect with and share our skills, expertise, and, of course, training with a broader number of people.

We have always delivered training in Melbourne a few times a year, but now that I'm based here, we can offer so much more from tailored in house courses to support for networking and industry events as well as faster responses to investigations and these are just the obvious things. I'm excited for what else we can do with this opportunity, what solutions we can come up with to help organisations and people out.

?If you're based in Melbourne and care about WHS and ICAM or are looking for specific help with your safety, then reach out. I'm always open for a chat or a coffee."

If you're in Perth and looking to improve your incident investigation skills, don't miss our upcoming ICAM training sessions. Our Perth courses integrate the insights and practical applications Brendon brought back from Papua New Guinea, offering attendees a uniquely enriched learning experience. These courses are crucial for anyone involved in workplace health and safety, incident investigations, or risk reduction activities.

Pru Giagtzis , one of our Senior Investigators, attended the Perth Safety and Injury Forum 2024 in June. The event was a great chance to connect with ICAM Australia clients and reflect on WHS laws two years after their introduction, along with discussing psychosocial hazards and risks.

Pru also gained insights from a great lineup of insurers and lawyers into the new Workers’ Compensation and injury management laws for WA, which have been effective since July 1. Some key changes discussed include:

1. Definition of a Worker

2. Introduction of Provisional Payments

3. Introduction Catastrophic Injuries Support Scheme?

4. Worker Entitlements

5. Psychological Injury Exclusions

6. Settlement of Compensation Payments

7. Noise Induced Hearing Loss

Key takeaways from his latest book include the need for Safety Metrics to move from lag indicators to focus on predictive indicators, system effectiveness, and effective risk management.?

Insights into WA Workers Compensation Claims 2022 - 2023

The top industries for psychological claims in 2022-2023 were healthcare and social assistance (22%), education and training (19%), and public administration and safety (17%). Key causes of these claims included harassment and bullying (36%), work pressure (28%), and exposure to traumatic events (18%).

In recent years, workplace fatalities in Australia have shown a rising trend, as outlined by Safe Work Australia’s 2024 data (https://data.safeworkaustralia.gov.au ). While the overall trend has shown a decline since 2007, there has been an uptick from its lowest point of 1.14 in 2019. The highest rates of fatal incidents occurred in transport, postal and warehousing, agriculture, forestry and fishing, and construction. These deaths serve as a sobering reminder of the ongoing need for enhanced safety measures and risk management strategies across the country.

A key aspect of correcting this upwards trend is performing effective incident investigations that focus on identifying systemic issues, such as organisational factors and absent or failed defences. This will allow for proactive mitigation and reactive learning to reduce the risk of similar events.
