What's new in Power Platform? - Ep 12

Before diving into the new feature, I'd like to introduce myself. I am Stuart Baxter, Power Platform Solution Architect at?Kerv Digital. I've been working with Microsoft technologies for almost 8 years and have spent the last 4 working with Power Platform. I enjoy building creative solutions for our customers using the latest features.

In this episode we will be looking at the App Opener Security Role - a new out of the box role that provides the minimum set of permissions required to open an app - think of it like "Basic User", but with even less permissions.

This has been around under the name "min priv apps use" as a downloadable unmanaged solution - its now in general release and available in all environments!

Why is the app opener role so useful?

The app opener role contains the bare minimum permissions required to use apps (both model driven and canvas) - up until now makers have had 3 options if the basic user security role has too many permissions:

  1. Start from the basic user role and remove permissions - this presents a risk as oversights could lead to extra permissions
  2. Start from a blank role - this requires a level of knowledge as without certain permissions you will face access errors - you might not face them straight away, but you will face them eventually!
  3. Give users another OOTB role and strip out the unused permissions - this presents the same risk as basic role, probably more as the other OOTB roles start with more permissions.

But not any more...

By using the app opener role, users are given only the permissions they NEED to run apps - no access to things like accounts. contacts, mailboxes, etc - in summary this role is what basic user should have been!

How do I get access to the app opener role?

The App Opener Role is available by default, in all environments from 3rd March 2023... so you can try it straight away!

Conclusion

The App Opener role gives a great base to start building custom roles, without the same level of risk involved in starting from basic user - or the same effort required in starting from scratch.

I hope you enjoyed this episode of What's new in Power Platform - please join us again next time where I'll be diving into another great new feature!

Thanks for the tip???? I have been using the 'min priv apps use' solution for a long time and this makes life just that little bit easier for us. Also posted on the Microsoft learn I just saw: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform-release-plan/2022wave2/data-platform/minimum-privilege-security-role-renamed-environments
