In a typical week more than 200 peer reviewed PFAS related articles are published--below is a small sample of recent articles.
PFAS covers many different subject areas--ranging from wastewater treatment to law to fashion.

Peer Reviewed Research
Batzella, E., et al. (2024). "Decreases in serum PFAS are associated with decreases in serum lipids: A longitudinal study on a highly exposed population." Sci Total Environ: 176227.
INTRODUCTION: Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are widely used, ubiquitous and highly persistent man-made chemicals. Previous cross-sectional studies have consistently linked PFAS exposure to alterations in lipid profiles. However, longitudinal investigations are preferred to mitigate issues related to reverse causation and confounding. Hence, we aimed to investigate the association between changes in serum PFAS and changes in serum lipids, while shedding light on potential modifiers of the examined relationships.

Cao, Z., et al. (2024). "Reproductive and germ-cell mutagenic effects of poly-and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to Caenorhabditis elegans after multigenerational exposure." Sci Total Environ: 176224.
In this study, we evaluated long-term reproductive toxicity of environmentally relevant levels of four long-chain PFAS compounds: perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, C8), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA, C9), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA, C10), and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS, C8), and examined their germ-cell mutagenicity in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Dui, W., et al. (2024). "Development, validation, and clinical assessment of a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry serum assay for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) recommended by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM)." Anal Bioanal Chem.
In 2022, the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) published Guidance on PFAS Exposure, Testing, and Clinical Follow-up providing laboratory and clinical direction. The Guidance suggests nine PFAS should be measured in serum or plasma specimens and summed to provide a total PFAS concentration using a NASEM-recommended method.

Liu, J., et al. (2024). "Co-accumulation characteristics and interaction mechanism of microplastics and PFASs in a large shallow lake." Journal of Hazardous Materials 480 C7 - 135780.
Microplastics (MPs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) coexist widely in lakes and affect ecological security. The coexistence characteristics and adsorption-desorption mechanisms between MPs and typical PFASs were explored in a typical eutrophic shallow lake (Taihu Lake). Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE) are the primary types of MPs in Taihu Lake, with average abundances in water and sediment of 18630 n/m3 and 584 n/kg, respectively? 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Martínez, J., et al. (2024). "Occurrence and health risk assessment of PFAS and possible precursors: a case study in a drinking water treatment plant and bottled water (south Catalonia, Spain)." Environ Sci Pollut Res Int.
This study aims to determine the levels of these compounds and their precursors in water samples from a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) located in l'Ampolla (Spain) and to assess their fate. Additionally, ten Spanish bottled waters were analyzed to compare the occurrence of PFAS in the mentioned matrices and in drinking water.

Petrangeli Papini, M., et al. (2024). "Adsorption Technology for PFAS Removal in Water: Comparison between Novel Carbonaceous Materials." Materials (Basel) 17(17).
Among a number of remediation technologies, adsorption has been demonstrated to be a manageable and cost-effective method for the removal of PFASs in aqueous media. This study tested two novel and eco-friendly adsorbents (pinewood and date seeds biochar) on six different PFASs (PFOS, GenX, PFHxA, PFOA, PFDA, and PFTeDA). Batch sorption tests (24 h) were carried out to evaluate the removal efficiency of each PFAS substance in relation to the two biochars.

Phelps, D. W., et al. (2024). "Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances alter innate immune function: evidence and data gaps." Journal of Immunotoxicology 21(1).
To date, several reviews have been published to synthesize information regarding the immunotoxic effects of PFASs on the adaptive immune system. However, these reviews often do not include data on the impact of these compounds on innate immunity. Here, current literature is reviewed to identify and incorporate data regarding the effects of PFASs on innate immunity in humans, experimental models, and wildlife.

Post, C. M., et al. (2024). "Binary and quaternary mixtures of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) differentially affect the immune response to influenza A virus infection." Journal of Immunotoxicology 21(1).
Immune suppression has been among the most consistent effects of exposure to PFAS. PFAS often co-occur as mixtures in the environment, however, few studies have examined immunosuppression of PFAS mixtures or determined whether PFAS exposure affects immune function in the context of infection. In this study, mixtures containing two or four different PFAS and a mouse model of infection with influenza A virus (IAV) were used to assess immunotoxicity of PFAS mixtures.
