Alamo, A., et al. (2024). "In-Vitro Effects of Perfluorooctanoic Acid on Human Sperm Function: What Are the Clinical Consequences?" J Clin Med 13(8).

Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the in vitro effects of PFOA with hydrophobic and waterproofing properties on motility and bio-functional sperm parameters. Methods: To accomplish this, 50 healthy men with normozoospermia and not exposed to high doses of PFAS were enrolled. Their spermatozoa were incubated for 3 h with increasing concentrations of PFOA (0, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 mM) to evaluate its effects.

Beisner, K. R., et al. (2024). "Temporal variability and sources of PFAS in the Rio Grande, New Mexico through an arid urban area using multiple tracers and high-frequency sampling." Emerging Contaminants 10(3).

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous in the environment but sources are not well defined for temporal and spatial aspects within an urban environment, and especially for an arid urban environment subject to seasonal short term high -intensity precipitation events. A focused diel sampling was conducted in the summer of 2021 to assess the temporal and spatial variability of PFAS in the Rio Grande near Albuquerque, New Mexico and showed an order of magnitude increase of PFAS as it flows through the Albuquerque urban area. Biggeri, A., et al. (2024). "All-cause, cardiovascular disease and cancer mortality in the population of a large Italian area contaminated by perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (1980–2018)." Environmental Health: A Global Access Science Source 23(1 C7 - 42).

Background: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are associated with many adverse health conditions. Among the main effects is carcinogenicity in humans, which deserves to be further clarified. An evident association has been reported for kidney cancer and testicular cancer. In 2013, a large episode of surface, ground and drinking water contamination with PFAS was uncovered in three provinces of the Veneto Region (northern Italy) involving 30 municipalities and a population of about 150,000. We report on the temporal evolution of all-cause mortality and selected cause-specific mortality by calendar period and birth cohort in the local population between 1980 and 2018.. ? Cinzori, M. E., et al. (2024). "Associations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances with maternal metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers in early-to-mid-pregnancy." Environmental Research 250.

Background: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) can disrupt metabolism. Early-to-mid pregnancy is characterized by amplified metabolic processes and inflammation to support maternal adaptations and fetal growth. Thus, we cross-sectionally evaluated whether PFAS are individually and jointly associated with these processes in early-to-mid pregnancy. to single-PFAS analyses. Implications: Individual and joint PFAS exposures were associated with markers of maternal metabolism and inflammation in pregnancy. Further investigation is needed to elucidate possible mechanisms and consequences of these findings.

Haruna, I. and E. Obeng-Gyasi (2024). "Association of Combined Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Metals with Chronic Kidney Disease." Int J Environ Res Public Health 21(4).

Background: Exposure to environmental pollutants such as metals and Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) has become common and increasingly associated with a decrease in the estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR), which is a marker often used to measure chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, there are limited studies involving the use of both eGFR and the urine albumin creatinine ratio (uACR), which are more comprehensive markers to determine the presence of CKD and the complexity of pollutant exposures and response interactions, especially for combined metals and PFAS, which has not been comprehensively elucidated.

Herlory, O., et al. (2024). "Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) occurrence, concentrations and spatial distribution along the French Mediterranean coast and lagoons, based on active biomonitoring." Mar Pollut Bull 202: 116419.

Tracking PFAS in ecosystems is challenging. In this context, monitoring programs are crucial to fill data gaps, especially in marine environments, which are the ultimate outlets for these forever chemicals. The 2021 chemical contamination monitoring campaign along the French Mediterranean coast established a baseline for PFAS concentrations in mussels, with 90?% of measurements below quantification limits.

Hwang, S. H., et al. (2024). "Development of a method using QuEChERS and LC-MS/MS for analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in rice matrix." Food Chemistry 445.

Detection of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food is crucial for ensuring food safety. Therefore, we combined a quick, easy, cheap, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) extraction method with liquid chromatography-triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to detect 35 PFAS in rice.

Karthikeyan, B. S., et al. (2024). "Prenatal exposure to environmental contaminants and cord serum metabolite profiles in future immune-mediated diseases." J Expo Sci Environ Epidemiol.

In this study, we hypothesized that prenatal exposure to environmental contaminants impacts cord serum metabolome and contributes to the development of autoimmune diseases. METHODS: We selected cord serum samples from All Babies in Southeast Sweden (ABIS) general population cohort, from infants who later developed one or more autoimmune-mediated and inflammatory diseases: celiac disease (CD), Crohn's disease (IBD), hypothyroidism (HT), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), and type 1 diabetes (T1D) (all cases, N?=?62), along with matched controls (N?=?268). Using integrated exposomics and metabolomics mass spectrometry (MS) based platforms, we determined the levels of environmental contaminants and metabolites.

Liu, B., et al. (2024). "Remove legacy perfluoroalkyl acids and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl ether acids by single-use and regenerable anion exchange resins: Rapid small-scale column tests and model fits." Water Res 257: 121661.

Rapid small-scale column tests (RSSCT) are used to study the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) for drinking water treatment by ion exchange. Breakthroughs of 15 emerging per- and perfluoroalkyl ether acids and six legacy perfluoroalkyl acid analogs are studied using a single-use PFAS-selective anion exchange resin (AER1) and a regenerable, generic anion exchange resin (AER2).

Nie, P., et al. (2024). "F-53B mediated ROS affects uterine development in rats during puberty by inducing apoptosis." Ecotoxicol Environ Saf 277: 116399.

?Chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonate (F-53B), as a substitute for PFAS, was determined to have potential toxicity. Puberty is the stage when sexual organs develop and hormones change dramatically, and abnormal uterine development can increase the risk of uterine lesions and lead to infertility. This study was designed to explore the impact of F-53B on uterine development during puberty.

Robey, N. M., et al. (2024). "Characterization of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) and Other Constituents in MSW Landfill Leachate from Puerto Rico." Chemosphere: 142141.

Elevated per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) concentrations have been reported in municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill leachate with higher levels in wet and warmer subtropical climates. Information about landfill leachate characteristics is much more limited in tropical climates. In this study, 20 landfill leachate samples were collected from three MSW landfills on the tropical island of Puerto Rico and results were compared against landfills nationally and within Florida, USA.
