Peer Reviewed Research
Bohá?ková, J. and T. Cajthaml (2024). "Contribution of chemical toxicity to the overall toxicity of microplastic particles: A review." Sci Total Environ 957: 177611.
This study addresses this gap by reviewing studies examining both toxicity types, focusing on environmentally relevant leachates. The chemicals used in plastics manufacturing, which number over 16,000, include additives, processing aids, and monomers, many of which pose potential hazards due to their toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation.
?
de Jourdan, B., et al. (2024). "Microplastic biomonitoring studies in aquatic species: A review & quality assessment framework." Sci Total Environ 957: 177541.
The purpose of this study is twofold - first, to critically review and apply existing frameworks to an expanded body of literature. Second, to propose meaningful criteria to further assess study utility as it applies to the use of biomonitoring data to reliably quantitate (1) relationships between external and internal (biota) concentrations of MNPs, (2) differences among organisms, species, and/or regions, and (3) utility of species as effective biomonitors for MNPs in the marine environment.
?
Dey, S., et al. (2025). "Analytical approaches for quantifying and characterizing microplastics: Environmental impacts and bioaccumulation in aquatic Systems." Green Analytical Chemistry 12 C7 - 100191.
This review provides an extensive overview of the current methods used for MP detection and analysis, addressing their prevalence and risks, especially in aquatic ecosystems, where MPs are subject to bioaccumulation. ? 2024 The Author(s)
?
Gao, Y., et al. (2024). "A comprehensive review of microplastic aging: Laboratory simulations, physicochemical properties, adsorption mechanisms, and environmental impacts." Sci Total Environ 957: 177427.
Microplastics (MPs) in the natural environment will experience aging effect, aging will change the physical and chemical properties of MPs and affect the adsorption behavior. Recently reported characterization techniques of MPs and laboratory simulation of aging are reviewed.
?
Ghosh, T. (2025). "Microplastics bioaccumulation in fish: Its potential toxic effects on hematology, immune response, neurotoxicity, oxidative stress, growth, and reproductive dysfunction." Toxicology Reports 14 C7 - 101854.
Fish exposed to microplastics have a range of toxic effects viz. alteration to immune, antioxidant and hematological indices, bioaccumulation, neurotoxicity, growth and reproductive dysfunction, all were examined in this present review by using different indicators. ? 2024 The Authors
?
Isaac Chandran, P. J. and S. Veerasingam (2025). "Laser Direct Infrared Spectroscopy: A cutting-edge approach to microplastic detection in environmental samples." Talanta 284 C7 - 127284.
This review highlights recent advancements in microplastic detection technologies, with a particular focus on Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR) spectroscopy. ? 2024
?
Kumar, A., et al. (2024). "Recent advances in mechanistic insights into microplastics mitigation strategies via emerging advanced oxidation processes: Legislation, challenges, and future direction." Sci Total Environ 957: 177150.
In this review, we have attempted to provide a thorough overview of molecular mechanisms and highlighted recent advances in the degradation of commonly used MP by AOPs. The characteristics and limitations of each technique are thoroughly examined.
?
Lee, Y. K., et al. (2025). "Impacts of climatic stressors on dissolved organic matter leaching from microplastics and their effects on biogeochemical processes: A review." Water Research 271 C7 - 122867.
This review explores the potential impact of microplastic-derived dissolved organic matter (MP-DOM) on biogeochemical processes associated with global carbon and nitrogen cycles, with consideration given to the possible influence of irregular climate changes. ? 2024
?
Li, S., et al. (2024). "Current status of microplastic pollution and the latest treatment technologies." Sci Total Environ 957: 177467.
This paper seeks to comprehensively review the environmental hazards associated with MPs and to present the latest analytical techniques and countermeasures.
?
Luo, H., et al. (2024). "Factors Influencing the Vertical Migration of Microplastics up and down the Soil Profile." ACS Omega 9(51): 50064-50077.
This Review summarizes the current status of research into the factors affecting the vertical migration of soil MPs. Published research shows that the characteristics of MPs and the physicochemical properties of the soil affect the infiltration process.
?
Maia, A. and M. A. Vieira-Coelho (2024). "The impact of exposure to phthalates in thyroid function of children and adolescents: a systematic review." Eur J Pediatr 184(1): 111.
Numerous epidemiological studies have been conducted to evaluate the effects of phthalate exposure on thyroid function, both in adults and children. However, there is still considerable debate surrounding this issue. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted to clarify existing evidence and offer new insights into the magnitude of this disruption and its potential consequences for children and adolescents' health.
?
Mandal, M., et al. (2024). "Understanding the possible cellular responses in plants under micro(nano)-plastic (MNPs): Balancing the structural harmony with functions." Sci Total Environ 957: 177732.
So, the present literature review represents a comprehensive theoretical framework that includes genomics, transcriptomics, miRNAomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and ionomics/metallomics, which is established to understand the effects of MNPs on plants at the molecular level
?
Mandal, R. (2025). "A critical review on microplastics in edible fruits and vegetables: A threat to human health." Multidisciplinary Reviews 8(3 C7 - e2025088).
This abstract examines the presence of MPs in edible fruits and vegetables and their potential health implications. Studies have revealed the widespread contamination of agricultural soils and water sources with MPs, leading to uptake by plants. ? 2025, Malque Publishing. All rights reserved.
