What's New in Marketing April 2023

A brief update this month since I've been putting the finishing touches to an update to the eighth edition of my Digital Business and E-commerce management book as well as ongoing updates for Smart Insights members resources.

1 Chat GPT happenings

There is no let up in the hype behind ChatGPT, but behind this there have been a lot of commercial developments which show how Generative AI is entering the mainstream. I've written a summary covering 6 recent need-to-know GPT4 / Open-AI developments. The release of new features this year like GPT–4, AutoGPT, Plug-ins and ChatGPT Plus really shows how we're now starting to see the business and marketing potential translate to real-world products. I also cover Google Bard which is now live for beta testing, but doesn't seem to be getting much interest since it lacks the novelty of GPT4. Let me know if you have formed a view on the value of Bard yet!

2. Organic search best practices

Despite the excitement about ChatGPT changing search marketing in the future, SEO remains a vital driver of leads and sales for many businesses. This new visual from the Effworks summary via Les Binet Group Head of Effectiveness at adam&eveDDB shows how our ability to forecast (and it's strategic importance) differs by sector.

In May I'll be also giving an exclusive Masterclass for Smart Insights Business Pro members on Data-driven SEO sharing recommendations based on our approach with organic search contributing > 80% of our 600,000+ Monthly users.

3. A significant new addition to the Google Graveyard

Google is ruthless in 'killing-off' services that don't fit it's strategy / aren't returning ROI which are catalogued in https://killedbygoogle.com/. The latest addition is Google Optimize which will be missed by data-driven marketers including us at Smart Insights as a great free tool we use regularly for AB testing.

Google's sunset advisory notes that Optimize will remain available until September 2023. Ahead of that, we are collaborating on integrations with the following A/B testing providers (listed in alphabetical order):

  • AB Tasty
  • Optimizely
  • VWO

I'd be interested which people are thinking of switching to or whether there are other lower-cost options. Can any recommend which is the best price/performance option here since we'll need to switch soon?

If I can take us both back to the 90s Dave Chaffey I'm bound to flag Tim Parfitt as a very safe source of truth around Optimizely's fit for smaller budget environments. Oh and an excellent round up here, particularly the clarity on where all the AI best fits, for today at least.

I've used VWO at a couple of companies I've worked for. Great tool, great support, plus a simple to install server-side solution, and decent pricing.

Such a shame Optimize is being sent to the Google Graveyard. A great free solution. Will most probably revert back to Optimizely.
