What's New on LinkedIn? Key Updates and Strategic Insights for Business Owners and Consultants

The seasons are changing, and so is LinkedIn. LinkedIn has rolled out some exciting new features aimed at helping you maximize your visibility and engagement on the platform. Whether you're a veteran user or new to LinkedIn, these updates offer fresh opportunities to connect with your audience, grow your professional network, and attract potential clients.

So, why not take advantage of these new features and elevate your LinkedIn game? Here are seven key updates that you should know about.

Latest Updates on LinkedIn

1. The “Videos for You” Feed

LinkedIn has introduced a new “Videos for You” feed on its mobile app, bringing short-form videos to the forefront. The feature is similar to what you might see on platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube shorts. You can scroll through a personalized feed of videos from other users, and LinkedIn pages. (I swear, it feels like one in five videos are from a LinkedIn learning.)

Now, while you might not want LinkedIn to turn into TikTok or even YouTube shorts, the Video feed presents a two-fold opportunity for you. First, it allows you to diversify your content and experiment with short-form videos that showcase your expertise or provide valuable insights. Second, it offers a new way for users to discover your profile and engage with your content.

So far, I've only seen videos from people I don't follow, which could indicate a number of things:

  1. The video feed is highly curated, with only the most engaging videos appearing
  2. LinkedIn is testing the feature and will eventually show videos from your connections as well
  3. People I follow still aren't making videos (come on, guys!)

Either way, it's worth exploring and incorporating into your LinkedIn strategy. Whenever new features roll out, it's the perfect time to try something new and potentially reach a wider audience through video content.

2. Suggested Posts

LinkedIn now suggests posts in your feed, curating content based on your interests and interactions. It reminds me of the YouTube “Recommended” section — it's typically other posts by a creator whose content you've recently engaged with. Other times it's just something the algorithm thinks you'd find interesting.

Here's why I like this feature:

  • It allows you to discover new perspectives and ideas within your industry.
  • It's a great way to expand your network and engage with other professionals in your field.
  • It can also inspire new content ideas for you to create and share with your own followers.

If you're creating content, there's a good chance your posts could be noticed, which is why it's important to optimize your content for your readers.

Richard Moore emphasizes the importance of crafting content that addresses your audience's symptoms rather than just their pain points.

For example, instead of a generic “How to Increase Productivity” post, consider “5 Tips to Eliminate Distractions and Get More Done in your work day” — this second title speaks directly to the symptoms of low productivity rather than just stating a problem.

Actionable Tip: Take advantage of these suggestions to connect with like-minded professionals and contribute to discussions within your industry.

3. LinkedIn Newsletter Updates

Newsletters on LinkedIn are more powerful than ever, thanks to several new features:

  • Share Drafts: Collaborate with colleagues or get feedback before publishing.
  • Embed Company Page: Include your company page directly within your newsletter articles.
  • Create Article URL in Advance: Generate a URL for your article before publishing, perfect for pre-launch promotions.
  • Comment Thread on Desktop: Engage with readers more effectively by seeing comment threads alongside your articles.
  • Promote with Ads: Use LinkedIn ads to reach a wider audience with your newsletter.
  • Auto-Invite to Followers: Followers who aren't subscribed to your newsletter will receive an invitation after each new publication.

Actionable Tip: Start a newsletter if you haven't already! Use these features to refine your content and broaden your reach.

4. LinkedIn Desktop App for Windows

Did you know LinkedIn has a desktop app? It's exactly like the web app but without the extra open tabs and notifications that can distract you from intentional engagement. Plus, you can receive desktop notifications for new messages and updates, though I'd turn those off if you're easily distracted!

Bonus: You can also access LinkedIn Learning courses through the desktop app and easily switch between work and learning. Give it a try and see how it improves your productivity on LinkedIn.

5. Weekly Sharing Tracker for Personal Profiles

Personal profiles now come with a weekly sharing tracker that monitors your posts, comments, and contributions. LinkedIn suggests taking three actions each week to keep your profile active.

Actionable Tip: Follow LinkedIn's suggestion and engage consistently. Regular posting and commenting can enhance your visibility and establish you as a thought leader in your industry.

6. Shorter Links in Posts

Links shared via posts now appear shorter, making posts cleaner and more visually appealing compared to organic posts without links.

7. AI Assistant Chatbot

A new AI Assistant chatbot is here to help you learn more about specific topics related to posts you've just read. It also suggests posts in your feed, enhancing your content discovery experience.

How to Incorporate LinkedIn Updates into Your Content Marketing Strategy

Embrace Short-Form Video Content

With the “Videos for You” feed, it's time to start creating engaging short-form video content. Share insights, quick tips, or behind-the-scenes looks into your business to capture attention and drive engagement.

Optimize Your Newsletters

Take advantage of the new LinkedIn newsletter features to create more compelling and engaging content:

  • Draft Sharing: Collaborate with your team to refine your content before publishing.
  • Embedding Company Pages: Use this feature to drive traffic to your company page and increase your following.
  • Pre-Planned URLs: Share upcoming article links across your other platforms to promote upcoming posts.

Track and Improve Engagement

Use the tracker to monitor your activity and ensure you're consistently engaging with your network. Aim to post, comment, and contribute at least three times a week to maintain visibility.

Thanks for the solid summary of the new features, Robyn-Lee! Although I'm not sure I'm ready for the desktop app of LI, giving it the possibility of monitoring my actions... But then again, it is Microsoft.. so hmmmmmmm.
