What's new from Welke?

Curious to know what's going on in the Welke world of trade and logistics? This month's recap highlights our industry news and some helpful information on the Welke blog.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our co-founder, Bernard Richard Welke.

Born on May 14, 1958, in Toronto, and who passed away on July 10, 2024. Bernard's story is one of charisma, creativity, and a passion for life that touched everyone around him.

In 1985, at the age of 27, Bernard and his father, Rolf, started Welke Customs and Logistics in their basement. With a mix of Rolf’s industry connections and Bernard’s charismatic charm, they turned humble beginnings into a thriving business. Bernard's brother, Peter, soon joined them, and together they built the company from the ground up. Bernard's vision and entrepreneurial spirit laid the foundation for what our company is today. True to his created slogan, "the tradition continues," his legacy thrives through his son, Jordan Welke, and nephew, Derek Johnson, who now lead the Welke group of companies.

But Bernard's life wasn't just about business. He was a talented artist and a collector of eclectic art and design, filling his home with vibrant expressions of creativity. An adventurer at heart, he found joy in boating and sailing on Georgian Bay, and riding his beloved Harley Davidsons on winding country roads. His love for fine food and his knack for hosting extravagant parties brought people together, filling his home with laughter and warmth.

Above all, Bernard was a devoted father to his daughter, Stephanie, and his son, Jordan. His vibrant energy and zest for life left a lasting impression on everyone he met. We remember Bernard not just for his contributions to the business world but for his boundless love for life and the joy he brought to those around him.
