What's new from the EAU?
European Association of Urology
Raising the level of urological care
August has been filled with the thrill of watching the Olympics, cheering for your favourites, and seeing global unity in action! But now, let's dive back into urology: This month's newsletter features Dr. Karabacako?lu's scholarship experience in Germany, AFU's annual "Ride against Prostate Cancer" event, insights on chronic prostatitis, and how to get involved in Urology Week 2024. Plus, don't forget the EAU25 abstract submission deadline of 1 November.
Guided by experts at Schleswig-Holstein University Hospital
Dr. Burak Karabacako?lu (TR) shares details of his life-changing two-month clinical visit at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) in Lübeck, Germany. "My European Urological Scholarship Programme (EUSP) experience underscored the value of international collaboration and personal growth by stepping outside my comfort zone to embrace new challenges. I developed a project on bladder cancer and worked with experts in a diverse range of clinical activities." Read Dr. Karabacako?lu's full scholarship report here. The next EUSP application deadline is 15 September if you are interested.
"Let's ride against prostate cancer" - Climb Mont Ventoux with AFU
EAU Secretary General Prof. Stenzl is ready for another Ventoux challenge! Who will be joining him? On 7 September 2024, the French Association of Urology (AFU) has its annual cycle climb of Mont Ventoux with ex-pro cyclist Bernard Hinault to raise public awareness of health through sport and the fight against prostate cancer. AFU President Prof. Alexandre De La Taille tells his patients "We have to move! Sport helps to prevent cancer and slows down the progression of the disease. It also helps with psychological wellbeing." See more details and register to join this cycle ride.
Chronic prostatitis or primary prostatic pain syndrome (PPPS)?

Chronic prostatitis – does this disease really exist and what can we do? According to the EAU Section of Outpatient and Office Urology (ESUO) members Dr. Horst Brenneis (DE) and Prof. Helmut Haas (DE), this question can be answered with a clear yes, at least as far as the histological diagnosis is concerned, but the issue of the clinical disease is less clear. Read their expert opinion on why the term chronic prostatitis should be avoided, as well as reference to the EAU Guidelines on Chronic Pelvic Pain 2024, and how to approach diagnosis and treatment.
How can you get involved in Urology Week 2024?
Full preparations are underway for Urology Week 2024, which takes place from 23-29 September. This year's focus is building on the research of the 'Urge to Act' coalition to raise awareness of continence issues, which not only impact patients but their loved ones, national health systems, the economy, the environment, and society too.
You can do your part to raise awareness by organising an awareness event and adding it to the events calendar and/or requesting the official Urology Week 2024 awareness posters (these are available in 20 languages!)
EAU25 abstract submission is open till 1 November
Submit your original research by 1 November for the chance to present at Europe's largest urology event. Follow the timeline above and see the submission criteria for your journey to presenting in Madrid, Spain, this spring (21-24 March, 2025)! See more details here.
