Confronting Health Care Inequities with CHEO Power
California may be the world's fifth largest economy, but our state has a long way to go to wipe out inequities in health care.?
This year a new report by Aurrera Health Group found glaring disparities in health care for Black and Latinos in California, one of the country's most multicultural states. Among their findings: Black Californians had the lowest life expectancy (74.6 years) of all ethnicities, and Black mothers experienced the highest maternal mortality. One in 10 Latinos reported they were uninsured, nearly one in five reported they had no regular place of care, and one in four had an income below the poverty level.?
To help address these gaping disparities, California's CalAIM program requires that all?Medi-Cal managed care plans include a "chief health equity officer," or CHEO.
CCI is honored to have been invited to support the?CHEO Network, a peer initiative across California that has been in the works for some time. We're collaborating with the?Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the California Health Care Foundation to help CHEOs address long-standing inequities in California health care.
“Our goals are to build a strong community of peers among CHEOs and support their success,“ says CCI Program Coordinator Nickita Gupta, MPH . “This network is responsive to the emerging needs and priorities of the CHEOs; a space to support CHEOs in multiple ways —?a laboratory to test new ideas, a sandbox to ideate, a sounding board, or simply a space to connect with one another. We look forward to?building a community of peers that CHEOs can lean on, now and in the future.”
