In Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, Tackling Language Barriers for Latino Patients

Gunnison Valley Health 's hospital and clinics pride themselves on providing exceptional care, so they were surprised and disheartened to find that some Latino patients felt left out. After some digging, the health center discovered that residents whose preferred language is Cora, an indigenous language in Mexico, were dissatisfied because of communication barriers and had even travelled outside the valley to get medical care.

Leaders decided to reach out to the Latino community, including both Cora- and Spanish-speaking residents, to better understand the criticisms and how they could better serve patients.?It was important to simply listen, says Nicole Huff, the chief nursing officer and member of CCI’s?Colorado Health Innovation Community. Learn how that community listening session led to a language preference survey,? trilingual patient navigator, Cora interpreters — and patients who?are now much happier with the services offered at the health hub.?
