What’s in the near future for White’s Ferry

What’s in the near future for White’s Ferry

My wife Stacy and I were both surprised and touched by the outpouring of support and encouragement from the community when we announced our purchase of White’s Ferry in February. Since closing the purchase, we have worked actively with stakeholders to re-open the ferry in a timely fashion. While we hoped that would happen this spring, we are letting the process play out.

The former ferry owner, Herb Brown, and his team have been a pleasure to work with, as have the municipalities and states on both sides of the Potomac -- all of which are interested in protecting this important transportation route. Unfortunately, we are encountering obstacles to gain usage rights in Virginia. We will be seeking additional help from Loudoun County and the State of Virginia to ensure this vital route serves our community and people. Unfortunately, this could take another five to ten months.

White’s Ferry has stood as a significant transportation route between Maryland and Virginia for over 230 years. In recent years nearly 800 cars and trucks used the ferry each day to cross the Potomac River as an alternative to the Beltway. Its closure last December interrupted the daily travel and transportation patterns for many in our community.

Beyond disruptions, the continued closure of White’s Ferry has ramifications for our local economy and the livelihoods of many people, including those supporting the agricultural, technology and retail sectors. The economic impact on local businesses in Loudoun and Montgomery counties is especially unfortunate, as the ferry creates an opportunity for those coming west to access the west bank of the Potomac, shop at the outlet stores, and visit the wineries.

Purchasing White’s Ferry aligns with my and my family’s commitment to preserving land and landmarks. The history and scenery of the ferry are quite memorable. My hope is that the Ferry can resume service to offer this convenience and experience to our neighbors.

While the process plays out, my team focuses on making additional improvements to the ferry and its surroundings. We are looking into renaming the ferry to create a better representation of the area. Updates to the facility and grounds will enhance what has been established over the last two centuries. Stacy and I are honored to be part of White’s Ferry history and caretakers of its future.

This view is why when going to Montgomery County or Frederick I choose the ferry over the beltway. Absolutely love this ride.
