What's in a name?

What's in a name?

Big Hero 6. How to Train your Dragon. UP.  Kung Fu Panda.  Frozen.

These are absolutely great titles.

With Steven Spielberg's latest release being positioned as what might be his biggest and most significant flop, one's gotta wonder... is it in the name?

The BFG.

What is that?

Well, to me it looks like a nostalgia play on the part of Disney to resonate with adults who read the classic Roald Dahl book as a child and want to share the experience with their kids.

The problem though is it isn't working.  The BFG doesn't generate buzz.  The BFG doesn't say ANYTHING about the film.

And, I get that straight up calling the movie 'The Big Friendly Giant' sort of gives the whole narrative away.  The audience makes a presumption that the giant is scary and it increases the potential for emotional attachment when it's revealed that he is in fact... a nice guy.

But didn't they do that in the trailer anyway?

I don't know... $22 Million on a $140 Million Dollar budget just seems like a BFW of money to me.

So, how about you?  Do you think if they titled it 'The Big Friendly Giant', alternative to the abbreviation, this movie woulda have been more positively received?
