What started out as a study/support group of doctors in the Great Lakes Region 33 years ago (GLACM) was changed to “The International College of Integrative Medicine” in 2001. Why is it that one of the smallest medical associations in existence chose to describe themselves with such grandiose words? The founders of ICIM were ambitious. They had a vision, not of numbers but of a scope of understanding that stretched beyond national borders and current conventions of healing. Follow me through some of the historic notes that illustrate the development of our name.

?

An unmitigated success is the only way to describe the XII International Congress of GLACM held at the Amway Grand Plaza in Grand Rapids….Three and a half foreign countries were represented:?Canada, Belgium, and Switzerland.?New member John Trowbridge attended from the “1/2” foreign country.?Do you remember the Lone Star State used to be an independent country with embassies before they became part of the United States??Great Lake Gazette October 1989

?

Membership Escalates: Whether it be from Pacific Rim countries, the Northern Border, the Caribbean, or even across the pond, Northern Hemispheres physicians have suddenly recognized the leadership of GLACM and are attending and joining this alternative medical group. North American members from Florida to Dakota’s the Carolina’s to Lake Meade recognize the leadership/training qualities, and are expanding/offering their training to other degreed individuals.?They being M.D.’s, D.O.’s, DVM’s, DDS’s, DC’s, ND’s, and DPM’s.?Great Lakes Gazette Fall 1994

?

Several members have suggested that we consider changing the name of GLACM reflecting our membership which is now throughout the United States and also in Australia and Indonesia.?Your Board of Directors requests that each member give thought to this and send your suggestions to our executive director. ?Great Lakes Gazette Spring 1996?

?

The prospect of a new name—to recognize our evolving national and even global theme—will be entertained, with suggestions sought from members.?GLCCM Board Meeting September 2000

?

21 years ago it finally happened. We became “The International College of Integrative Medicine.” ICIM has continued to benefit from international members. We acknowledge that it is not just our members, but our mindset that is international. At almost every meeting we have a speaker from outside the US, and we also have an incentive fund to help bring attendees to our conferences from overseas.

Our Dearborn meeting April 6-10, 2022 is no exception. We are proud to have our member Antonio Jimenez, MD, ND offer a balanced explanation of the importance of an integrative oncology strategy based on the 7 Key Principles of Cancer TherapyTM used in Hope4Cancer's treatment centers in Mexico. Established in 2000, Hope4Cancer's Tijuana center is a certified 21-bed inpatient hospital, while the Cancun center, founded in 2015, provides the same treatment protocols in an outpatient environment.?For more than 30 years, Dr. Jimenez has dedicated his life to the study, clinical research, and implementation of non-toxic and integrative strategies to treat cancer, chronic infections, and immune disorders. Today, he is one of the most trusted voices in the world of integrative cancer therapy. His credentials include an M.D. from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara, Mexico Faculty of Medicine, an N.D. from the Trinity School of Natural Health, USA and medical licenses in Mexico and Spain.

?

Dr. Jimenez leads a team of over 25 M.D. physicians at his two treatment centers. He is a Gonzalez Guardian, one of seven physicians worldwide certified to treat patients with the Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez Protocol. An avid educator who has shared his wisdom with large audiences across the world, he has traveled to more than 70 countries learning, training, and researching new approaches to treat cancer, and his work has been featured in several peer-reviewed articles. In 2020, Dr. Jimenez launched a free, biweekly webinar series through which he has been educating global audiences on wide-ranging topics on healing at all three levels—the body, the mind, and the spirit

?

He will bring a special understanding to the classroom about the scientific basis of how the biological and physical hallmarks of cancer promote an oncogenic biological terrain in the body. We want our learners to be able to expand their understanding of cancer therapy beyond the idea of simply killing cancer cells to one that "treats the person, not just the cancer,” a concept useful for both prevention and treatment.
