What's on My Mind: Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace

In 1992, the World Federation for Mental Health recognized October 10 as Mental Health Day. It was established to raise awareness of mental health issues, promote mental health advocacy, reduce stigma, and mobilize efforts to support mental well-being worldwide. This year’s theme is "It's time to prioritize mental health in the workplace." The focus is on workplace culture to mitigate employee burnout, anxiety, and stress, thereby creating an environment where employees feel valued and empowered.

The Impact of Work on Mental Health

Work significantly affects mental health – ideally, it should provide a sense of purpose, enhance self-worth, and provide connections with colleagues. A supportive work environment is crucial for both physical and mental well-being. Unaddressed mental health challenges can lead to absenteeism, lower productivity, poor performance, and higher staff turnover. Conversely, organizations that invest in mental health initiatives create a culture where employees can thrive, leading to increased engagement, resilience, and job satisfaction. These initiatives also boost a company’s reputation, making it attractive to top talent.

Steps to Improve Mental Health in the Workplace

WIFA believes the following steps can significantly enhance mental health in the workplace:

  • Set Boundaries: Working from home can blur the lines between personal and professional life, pressuring employees to be constantly available, which can lead to burn-out. Clear expectations regarding working hours and deadlines, along with discouraging non-urgent after-office communications, can alleviate this stress and anxiety.
  • Take Breaks: Employees often sit at their desks/computers for extended periods to stay on top of their work. Encouraging regular breaks allows employees to re-energise and refresh, boosting productivity and well-being.
  • Be Active: Regular physical activity can lower stress, improve well-being, and increase focus. Encouraging walking during breaks, gym time, or organizing office well-being challenges inspire employees to stay active. Additionally, practices like yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises can enhance mental clarity, reduce anxiety, and relax the mind.
  • Provide Training: Continual mental health training equips teams and managers with the knowledge and tools to recognise and support mental health challenges in the workplace.
  • Lead by Example: Managers can set the tone by prioritizing mental health themselves, demonstrating that it is a critical part of the workplace culture.

Continuing the Dialogue Beyond World Mental Health Day

While October 10th is a crucial day to raise awareness, the dialogue around mental health should be discussed everyday. Organizations should strive to create a workplace culture of openness and empathy, where mental health issues are not stigmatized. Management should regularly check in with their teams to ensure employees feel supported. By proactively implementing mental health initiatives, organizations can foster a positive, supportive culture that benefits both employees and the broader community.

In support of raising awareness on October 10 WIFA is sponsoring a yoga and meditation session designed to promote mindfulness and wellness (see details below). Join us in making mental health a priority in the workplace, not just on World Mental Health Day, but every day. #WorldMentalHealthDay
