What's more important to you 'reputation' or 'identity' ?

Reputation or Identity ??

In the early years of my career, I hardly bothered about my reputation. In my opinion, it was foolish to waste your?time thinking?about what people perceive of you and to strive to change it in case it was not favorable. I might have appeared arrogant and haughty, but I never cared. Well, as the years passed, I learned the importance of building a great reputation in the workplace.?If you are confused about the two. Let me explain the difference.

?Identity refers to who you are as a person, your characteristics, values, beliefs, and personal experiences that make you unique. Identity is personal and private, and it remains constant over time. Your identity is largely determined by your upbringing, culture, and personal choices, and it is not something that can be easily changed.

?Reputation, on the other hand, refers to the perception that others have of you based on your actions, behaviour, and interactions with others. It is the opinion or view that people hold about your character and behaviour. Reputation is public and visible to others, and it can change over time depending on your actions and interactions with others.

?While it is not possible to change how people see you, putting a little effort into building a good reputation at work?can be a game changer. It is?important for your professional success.

Here are some action steps that can help you build a great reputation at work:

Be reliable: One of the most important aspects of building a good reputation is being reliable. Be consistent in your work, meet your deadlines, and deliver quality work consistently.

Communicate effectively: Good communication skills are essential for building a positive reputation. Be clear, concise, and professional in your communication, and ensure that you actively listen to others.

Be collaborative: Work collaboratively with others and be willing to help when needed. Offer your skills and expertise to support your colleagues, and be open to feedback and ideas from others.?

Maintain a positive attitude: A positive attitude can go a long way in building a good reputation. Be optimistic, enthusiastic, and approachable, and maintain a professional demeanor in all your interactions.

?Be proactive: Take the initiative and be proactive in your work. Identify opportunities to improve processes, systems, or products, and take ownership of your work.

?Build relationships: Building strong relationships with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders is essential for building a positive reputation. Invest time in building relationships and networking with people who can help you achieve your professional goals.

?Develop your skills: Continue to learn and develop your skills to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices in your field. This will help you to enhance your reputation as a competent and knowledgeable professional.

Remember, building a great reputation takes time and effort. It requires consistent effort and a commitment to professionalism, integrity, and excellence.

Well articulated, Lt Cdr (Dr) Sadhana Giri (Retd), Indian Navy, Change Enabler In essence, identity is the intrinsic and unique characteristics that define an individual, while reputation is the perception or evaluation of those characteristics by others.

Absolutely love the share Lt Cdr (Dr) Sadhana Giri (Retd), Indian Navy, Change Enabler Identity is what we think of ourselves, and reputation is what others think about us. I remember the day I got commissioned ( 9 mar 1990) , my father said to me , Son Now i am satisfied, you will have a great life. Now the question is who all others we should be mindful of. Certainly, we cannot please all. I guess as we mature, we get the wisdom to choose some and leave some. Once we are clear about who all matters, we can be intentional about how we behave. Life has to be a mix of Knowing self, caring for self and Building a reputation with people who matter.
