What's The Missing Piece In Your IoT System?

We’d like to have your comment on what’s important to you for your deployed IoT system.

If you manufacture, deploy or operate an IoT system of remotely deployed data devices.? It could be a few tens of devices or tens of thousands.? Your experience will be help focus on what’s important to you.

A team of computer science students from University of Plymouth are working on this problem by building an ‘IoT Lifecycle Manager’.? The goal is a platform that helps look after IoT systems from ‘cradle to grave’.? Let’s be clear: this is managing data about the IoT system. (but not the data from the system where that is already managed elsewhere).

That could include manufacturing and design build records, identity serial numbers, customer record integration, installation instructions and photographs of installation, connectivity identifiers and history, maintenance history and recycling at end of life.? Our IoT Lifecycle manager could also include integration with other platforms such as wireless connectivity and manufacturing build databases.

Right now we’re gathering customer needs and designing the use case.? We’d like to hear what you consider important.? In the next few weeks coding of the system will begin and we expect to have a trial underway that you could test out with us.

Here are some thoughts you can vote on or add comments below.? We’d be very happy to have a longer chat and you are welcome to follow up with us.

  • Include instructions for the device installer to use
  • Save photographs at installation or servicing
  • Record battery changes, or other maintenance or repair
  • Record device swaps between sites or customers
  • Link to connection platform records
  • Record recycling or disposal actions

What is most important or the biggest pain for you?? What else could we include?

Missed your post originally - overdue a catch up. Have a few projects rolling out at the moment. Having access to developers who can add in functionality cost effectively is key. Looking at each clients problems then looking at cost to solve vs return of investment gained. RFID is definitely filling the cost-effective space in many rollouts vs using an IOT asset tracker. Start with trial , POC , prove it then roll out.

Managing billing for customers in a SaS solution and tracking both stock on hand, deployed units and a device returns process is a missing piece for most platforms. It's often split between an ERP for manufacturing and the IoT platform for fleet management. Gets very messy with device movements between customers and RMA/refurb
