What's LOVE Got to "Do" with it? {46}

November 13, 2020

Dear Sparrow,

"God's dem·o·li·tion builds in places where once demolished" this I know to be certain and true. The meaning in webster states that dem·o·li·tion is the action or process of demolishing or being demolished. That's how I felt when learning my father has Dementia. It was like my heart was made of porcelain and shattered into a million pieces. While picking up the pieces reflecting on memories of my entire life with him within a flash, and wondering how much time we have remaining with him. To me the most valuable, because I want to do so much with him, learn so much from him, have intimate conversations, all the things we never did or had opportunity to do before.

We've all had the deja vu moments thinking we have time to do the things we've always wanted to do with our parents, take those trips, creating those additional memories. In reality time moves quickly and we do not have the time we imagine to have in most cases. Something such as this news tends to serve as a reminder of this truth proving time dwindles, as we're getting older ... so are our parents.

With every sunrise and sunset my daddy, the dad I've known my entire life of fifty plus one years is declining rapidly before our eyes. This unexpected demolition of my heart prompts me to take notice that what I've always known of my dad doesn't ring true to be today. I have always wanted more, and now I have opportunity to have it. It's never too late to have a relationship rebuild with a loved one. Simply, BE prideful although not truly prideful.

I had to find the grace in my heart to surrender through allowing the demolition to take place, because it was happening either way. We are unable to stop time or change diagnosis; however, it's powerful when accepting the reality of what's to be, embracing the wisdom that comes along with such valuable lessons in life. Fact is ~ you can attempt to run from it (the truth) or toward the realness of it; however, the inevitable is real.

If you're wondering what love has to do with dem·o·li·tion. As always, I must say "Everything" because, when there is time to allow the old to pass away and soar in the new within the time made available, it's a blessing to capture these precious moments to change the narrative while you're able to do so. The end comes ... we simply don't know when or how it'll introduce itself to us; therefore, live in togetherness while you're alive, because there is an end to all relationships.

Grace & Gratitude,

Valerie Miller
