What’s it like to work at Sage? #LifeAtSage

Sage is one of the North East’s biggest employers and everyone seems to know someone who works at Sage. For those who live in the North East, we all know that Sage is our very own, home grown, global technology business that is super successful and of course a FTSE 100 business. Many times I get asked the big Q - “What’s it like to work at Sage?” Well, here is a little insight into my average day just for those curious minds….
My day starts ‘Bleep! Bleep! Bleep!” and my cat Jessie runs in and jumps on the bed to say hi!
I then venture into the shower and as I close the shower door, through the window I see the impressive Sage North Park building in the distance. I start thinking about what’s in the diary for the day ahead. Today, it’s really sunny and there’s a beautiful blue sky outside.
On entering Sage HQ the tasty smell of breakfast fills the air as I walk past the first of our two coffee shops to the cafeteria breakfast bar….
Today, I feel a bit full after last night’s Chinese takeaway so I opt for a large Americano coffee and a banana instead…
After reviewing several candidate applications via our company website, I spend time direct sourcing and liaising with candidates on LinkedIn. Next I jump on twitter, then Instagram and continue to liaise with prospective candidates – I love how social Sage is – definitely the way forward!
I spend the next couple of hours catching up and collaborating with my hiring managers.
Time for lunch – I venture down with my colleague Steven and anyone who wishes to join us. Lunch at Sage is great as there are sooooo many options! Too many options! Do I fancy a healthy freshly made salad? Soup? Kebab? Chips & curry? Jacket potato? Sandwich? Home-baked muffin or scone?
After lunch, the recruitment team has a catch up meeting which includes our team in Ireland and other locations all via telepresence – I love this technology! So much quicker and easier to share best practice when we can all talk together – this is our team innovation time!
After the meeting I head back to my desk and continue speaking with candidates to screen them and see what they’re looking for in their next role – so many great candidates in the mix this week which is very exciting!
Email arrived from our Group CEO, Stephen Kelly, telling us this month’s One Sage update and next month’s plans. The communication is always a short video which is fab at driving engagement as you really get to feel the passion behind his message, understand how we are winning in the market with focus on our customers for life strategy.
Next we discuss in the office what we can do as a team to support our Sage Foundation – decision is made and we are going to Kielder in June to support the Cramlington Youth Volunteering Project. This is in addition to the interview coaching I am helping with at a local school later in the year. It’s great as we get 5 days each year to do the right thing and make a positive difference to our local communities through our Sage Foundation.
Now time for more coffee…. I head down to my preferred coffee shop however as I reach the till I change my mind and treat myself to a lush skinny ‘We are Canny’ milkshake instead then back up to my desk.
Diary reminder pop’s up! It’s time for my online training! :-) I specialise in recruiting for Marketing talent and I am currently studying via e-learning ‘Online Marketing Fundamentals’. The aim is to develop my marketing knowledge so I am best placed to source top talent, ask the ‘right’ questions to candidates, understand the lingo and fully support my hiring managers. My rule and strategic mindset is – the more I know, the better I can help Sage build effective teams - so as a specialist marketing recruiter, I need to also be a good marketeer!
After an hour, I am back on LinkedIn building relationships with potential candidates and others in the industry for the remainder of the day before I head home.
I know I should really use the onsite gym before I leave work however it’s sunny outside so maybe tomorrow! I am off to visit family on the way home.
Anyways, my day at Sage is now over and one of the best things about working here is that while I am walking out of those glass doors after a busy day and exit the building – I am already looking forward to coming back tomorrow! At Sage, I love the people, the tough challenges, the innovation, the strong customer focus, the environment, the culture, the new opportunities, the coffee and most importantly the people development focus to really be the best we can be! #LifeAtSage
