On June 6, 1944, 156,000 young men traveled by ship and plane over the English Channel to attack Nazi forces dug in at Normandy, France. Nothing less than the fate of Western Civilization hung in the balance. While the sea invasion was the largest in history, all knew, including the supreme allied commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower that chances for an allied victory were at best 50 – 50.
