What's the Latest on the Cisco CCNA Certification Blueprint, October 2023?
Throughout 2023, I've been keeping a close eye on the status of the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification blueprint. For those not in the know, the CCNA is a certification offered by Cisco, designed to evaluate a candidate's knowledge and proficiency in areas like network fundamentals, IP connectivity, security fundamentals, and automation and programmability.
In the past, Cisco would typically announce updates to the CCNA exam at various intervals, with the most recent significant announcement overhaul occurring during Cisco Live in 2020. This reshaped the CCNA certification landscape, replacing several specialized CCNA certifications with a unified CCNA certification encompassing a broader range of networking topics.
Based on the historical pattern of updates happening roughly every three years, I initially anticipated a potential refresh around the summer of 2023. However, as I write this in October, there seems to be no such update planned for this year.
Cisco has adopted a structured approach to the certification update process. They've laid out a roadmap that includes a review phase, an announcement, and, ultimately the publication of the updated exam blueprint. Checking their roadmap page on the web reveals that this is an annual cycle. The CCNA exam is typically reviewed in quarter three of the year, a new blueprint is released in quarter four, and the updated exam goes live in quarter one of the following year.

It's crucial to understand Cisco's quarters: Quarter one falls in the August-October period, quarter two spans from November to January, quarter three is from February to April, and quarter four stretches from May to July. Given that it's currently quarter one as I write this, we shouldn't anticipate any significant changes to the CCNA blueprint for at least the next 10 to 12 months, or during the summer of 2024.
