What's "Hour of Code?" to do with Digital Equity?
Hour of Code? is back again in 2021. Many schools and organizations worldwide, will be promoting it from 6 -12 Dec.
The Hour of Code is a one-hour intro to computer science. It is a fun activity, designed to explain concepts of code in a simple and easy to understand way. Its purpose is to show that anybody can learn the basics.
My first introduction to Hour of Code was four years ago when it first started. My daughter and I spent a fun hour making snowflake patterns with Elsa from Frozen!
Solving the diversity in technology problem begins early. This is where Hour of Code and Digital Equity cross paths. It is about creating equal opportunity for girls to learn and understand technology. It is about breaking the gender stereotypes. There are many reasons for this stereotype, including parents and caregivers, lack of female role models in technology, attitude of society and more.?
You can help. If you have never tried, try it yourself. Plant a seed, try it with someone else who might benefit. Host an event. Ask your local school or community to host it. Spread the word, share this. Just an hour's effort may create a change. Believe in the power of small steps. Learn yourself or teach someone at https://hourofcode.com/nz/learn
