WORLD LEADERS SUMMIT

Pauli Merriman, WWF Global Policy Manager Oceans: “WWF welcomes the CVF statement and the recognition of the importance of raising the role of?the ocean within the UNFCCC.?Action must be taken now to strengthen the mitigation, adaptation and resilience potential of the ocean and dependent communities, through nature-based?solutions and actions that deliver net-zero outcomes.”

Mark Lutes, WWF Climate & Energy Senior Climate Policy: “Decarbonizing the global shipping sector by 2050 is a crucial element of efforts to limit warming to 1.5 C degrees. Support from the Climate Vulnerable Forum towards this goal, including for a carbon levy and any other measures necessary to achieve this goal is important to accelerating actions by the International Maritime Organization and other initiatives.”

  • Technical negotiations started Monday and appear to have hit the ground running
  • Article 6: Discussion of a draft text by chair published overnight, and constructive discussions are taking place. REACTIONS FROM WWF

WWF leaders are on the ground in Glasgow watching everything unfold—here are their reactions to the latest proceedings.

Vanessa Pérez-Cirera, WWF Global Deputy Lead Climate & Energy: ?“We welcome this announcement as sending a clear signal that nature must be a core part of financial risk disclosures. This is one of the first announcements of this kind, as the Taskforce of Nature Financial Disclosures (TNFD) continues to pick-up steam.?It is estimated that at least 28% of the $11.2 trillion in development finance institution investments in 2019 are highly exposed to the risks of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation.”

Katie White, WWF-UK Executive Director of Advocacy and Campaigns:?

“This is a big step – the Chancellor has shown real leadership by mandating the UK’s financial institutions and listed companies to publish science-based transition plans. A thriving economy relies on a healthy planet, and this should be a wake-up call for the 80% of FTSE 100 firms yet to publish credible climate plans. The UK can’t keep its climate promises without swift action from companies, as they are responsible for two thirds of the UK’s climate emissions. Only science-based transition plans will keep us below 1.5°C of warming, and these must have short-term targets to spur action now.”?

Margaret Kuhlow, WWF Global Lead Finance: “This is exactly the sort of coalition and support we need to increase access to clean energy, and finance an inclusive, just transition. It will also help those private investors who have committed to net-zero expand their renewable energy investment flow to developing and emerging markets.”?

Vanessa Perez-Cirera, Global Deputy Lead Climate & Energy at WWF:??

“At WWF, we are very pleased to see that this initiative will provide funding for the energy transition, focusing on the key issue of access to renewable energy in the global south. Recognizing the need to attract private investment for a 1.5C aligned energy pathway is key but also in a way that ensures lifting people out of energy poverty. We warmly welcome this vision in the Facility announced today.”

"This welcome announcement signals the start of increased international cooperation for just transitions globally. We know from the EU's experience that setting a clear, science-based end-date for coal, providing financial support for affected communities, and ensuring open, inclusive planning ensures a smoother transition for all concerned. To be really impactful, the partnership should build on these lessons learned and kick-start discussions on an end year for coal in South Africa and how to get there. We also need to see action that is consistent with just energy transformation in terms of financing to sustainable sectors, technological transfer and an approach that is economy-wide."

  • The 2021 CSO Equity Review report,?Fair Shares Phase Out: A Civil Society Equity Review of an Equitable Global Phase Out of Fossil Fuels,?will be launched today at 3pm. It is an equity analysis of countries' NDCs to assess how each country is delivering to keep 1.5C alive. The launch is at 3pm in Zone C Derwentwater Room (Blue Zone). The report will be available at civilsocietyreview.org/report2021?from 3pm BST, or in advance on request from media. WWF, a signatory to the report.?

Mark Lutes, WWF Climate & Energy Senior Climate Policy Advisor: “The Equity Review report underscores the fact that fossil fuel production must be sharply reduced starting now, and be phased out globally before 2050. This report shows how this can be done fairly and in accordance with climate justice, minimizing and compensating impacts on the poorest and most vulnerable.”

Sandra Valenzuela,?WWF-Colombia Director:?“The commitment to create a Biosphere Reserve in the region not only increases the protection of marine ecosystems, but also opens the door to different forms of governance and management that will integrate the nations, and protect the migratory species and common ecosystems of this area that are so important for people, nature and the climate.”

  • MOU signed between PM of Belize John Briceno, WWF, The Nature Conservancy cementing commitment from Belize to collaborate on the development and execution of the Coastal-Marine Project Finance Initiative for Permanence?(PfP).?

Nadia Bood, WWF Mesoamerica’s Senior Program Officer: “We are most pleased to have received the commitment from the Belize Government to pursue a PfP. The PfP will help provide much needed financial resources to strengthen coastal ecosystems’ management and sustainable livelihoods for Belize.” Press contact: María del Rosario Calderón, [email protected]
