WHAT'S HOLDING WOMEN BACK IN MEDICINE?

Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to earn an MD degree in 1849. Fast forward to the 21st century, things have drastically changed and we see more women entering the medical field than ever before. Yet overall women make up only 34% of physicians in the U.S., and gender parity is still not reflected in medical leadership. There are various reasons for this disparity, one of them being women not receiving promotions and advancements at the same rate as their male peers.?

The issues surrounding the underrepresentation of women in academic and clinical medicine are complex, unresolved and need serious attention.?
